Question HHI-Where to shop for groceries?

We have all the information about the restaurants on HHI, but do not have a clue as to where to shop for groceries. We will be at the Marriott Grand Ocean during Xmas. How far are the supermarkets with the best price?

Thanks.

Best prices close to Grande Ocean are probably at Piggly Wiggly in Coligny Plaza, about a mile from GO - at the intersection of South Forest Beach (the street GO is on) and Pope.

Best selection and presentation, with prices almost the same, would be at Publix, about a mile from Coligny on Pope, just north of Sea Pines Circle.

Grocery stores

There are 2 grocery stores close to GO. If you go up Pope Ave, you'll go about a block past the Coligny Circle to get to the BiLo. Friendly advice, get a temporary discount card to take advantage of the sales.

You can also go to Coligny Plaza and there is a Piggly Wiggly. They usually have fresh fish for sale, as well as excellent steamed shrimp (get there before 5 pm for shrimp).

Fresh Market. However, they do not carry everything.

There's also a Walmart ans Sams Club up near near Port Royal end of the island (actually at Indigo Run). It is a little further but right on 278. I find their prices can't be beat for things like bottled water, soda, and many of the staples. Since HHI is small, nothing is really that far.

There are many grocers on the island and they carry beer and wine. By far my favorite is Fresh Market. As Bobcat said, you won't want to buy everything there but it is well worth a look. It is a gourmet grocer, better than Whole Food IMHO. Fruits are pricey, prepared meals are very good and the desserts well are just wonderful.

Piggy Wiggly(love that name) is in the back of Coligny Plaza and also near Giueseppes Pizza Wm Hilton Pkey,BiLo is behind Wild Wings on Pope Ave and also at the North end of the island.
Harris Teeter- Main St Plaza same lot as Frankie Bones
Food Lion-Starbucks Plaza across from Red Fish ( no discount card needed)
Sams Club-North End of the island toward Barony Beach.

Fresh Market-Wm Hilton Pkwy-main road after Wexford Plaza on the left same lot as Bonefish.

There are many little pocket of hidden stores, grocers and places to shop and it is hard to find things especially at night.

Should you want to buy liquor the stores close at 7pm on Saturdays and are not open Sundays.

When you get off of I 95, the first red light is a super Walmart on your left. It is still 30 minutes to the island so don't buy things that need refrig unless you have a cooler. You will pass Kroger on the right about 6 or 7 miles further and you will pass a Food Lion and Publix, but these are also on island. There is no super Walmart or Kroger on the island. Near GO on Pope Avenue there is a Bi-Lo. In Coligny there is a Piggly Wiggly(small). You will want to take the cross island parkway when you get on the island. After you go over the water on the cross island, you will pass a Food Lion on the left and a Publix on the right before getting to the Sea Pines Circle. After the circle, there is a Harris Teeter hidden on the right. There is a Fresh Market if you went 3/4 of the way around the Sea Pines Circle and went about a mile. GO folks can give you better directions for all of these places. If you just want to pick up something to make it through breakfast the next day, I would suggest Bi-Lo. All the grocery stores have their ad circulars at the front door. GO has a market place if money is no object. As "off island" locals, we like Harris Teeter and Publix. You have to realize that Hilton Head is beautiful because of building codes that "hide" all businesses. You will want good directions and daylight to find most places. It is supposed to hit 80 today. I think it is cooling off a little this weekend.

Forgot that we now have a light a Coastal Hospital just as you get off interstate so Super Walmart is 2nd light. We live in Sun City(3rd light). I have to use lights to figure out where I'm going. Unfortunately, new ones pop up and then I have to revamp my thinking(hard for a "senior" citizen).

There are two Piggly Wiggly and two Harris Teeters plus all the others. You won't go hungry. Stickty Fingers has Christmas lunch for folks who are not home for the holidays. They always need volunteers to help serve and the volunteers eat. We have never been but folks in our church say it is a great occasion. This is not for just needy folks and they charge just a contribution. Call Sticky Fingers 843-925-7427 if you would like a little holiday cheer.

I forgot to ask about internet access or computer availability at GO. Are there computers available so that I can leave the laptop at home?

Take your laptop. Wireless access is good in most units. The connection in a few units is poor enough that you'll need to take your laptop to the reception area for a connection.

Dave:
Thanks for the reply. I just got off the phone with the Marriott. I put in my request for a high floor in the buildings you indicated. I also inquired about the computer and they are in the process of opening a computer room. In the mean time, a computer is available for guests in the lobby. At least, this is what I was told a few minutes ago.
