Hi All -

I am new to Tug and have found all of the posts very informative. We own 3 properties and (as you can imagine since I just found Tug) bought them all from the developer. We are past the rescind period on all purchases, so that is not the question. On a recent trip (earlier this month) we went on our update and purchased our most recent property which was an EOY in Cancun, but we opted to just buy the gold season (81k staroptions) rather than the premium (148k staroptions). We went into the update vowing not to purchase anything and semi-regretting our previous purchases, but Cancun ended up looking attractive and wasn't overly spendy, so we decided we wouldn't feel too guilty about purchasing the gold season for $14k (it had an 80k starpoint incentive). It just dawned on me that we would pay the same amount of MF if we had purchsed the platinum season (148k staroptions) and the platinum season was only $5k more (total of $19k). I have no clue why I didn't realize this earlier; temporary insanity I guess. I now think that purchasing the platinum season for $19k would be more cost effective than our current purchase of the gold season for $14k considering the MF are the same. Does my logic make sense? Anyone come to a different conclusion or think of something I am missing? I'm seriously considering calling my sales guy and seeing if there is any way to switch this. Don't know if it's possible, but if my logic is correct I think it's worth looking into. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tim and Tricia (who is posting?) Welcome to TUG and the Starwood board! :hi: You logic makes sense to me, if you plan on exchanging your week regularly. We have some Cancun owners here and I'm sure they will chime in.

So... for $5K more you get an additional 67.1K SOs EOY...

at 81K SOs ($14K) - cost is 17.3 c/SO
at 67.1K SOs ($5K) - additional cost is 7.5 c/SO
for 148.1K SOs ($19K) - total cost is 12.8 c/SO

if you already spent 17.3 c/SO - seems that spending an additional 7.5 c/SO is worth it.

plus you get a season that has more value.

ask for more SP incentives...

Thanks

Thanks Denise and David! It's nice to have a second opinion to make sure we aren't forgetting about something and that we understand everything correctly. I've sent an email to my guy, so we'll see what he says. I can't imagine them saying no to getting more money, but you never know with them :p

David - The original deal they proposed for $19k platinum season did not include any incentives (they said the price was the incentive), so I'm hoping they will let us do the $19k, but keep the 80k incentives we received. Not sure we could negotiate for more, but honestly I've never tried.

Thanks again!
Tricia

Can you still rescind?

If so I'd rescind and look at your options for buying Starwood.

You can buy a cheap starwood voluntary resort resale than buy the same Cancun resort and get both in Starwood for almost the same price.
