Hong Kong help please - how many days?
My wife and I are considering a China trip this year. We would sign up with a tour, ending in Hong Kong. The tour group has 2 days (3 nights) in Hong Kong before returning to the US. The tour group offers a half day tour of Hong Kong on day 1, and then the rest of the time is free.
We are thinking about possibly extending our stay in Hong Kong, doing some sightseeing on our own, and then flying back a few days later. The tour operator is agreeable to such a deviation. Usually, when we are on our own (rather than with a tour group), we slow the pace down a bit and take our time. We did this in Paris before joining a tour group - Paris was easily worth a week on our own. We did the same in Rome - there's a week's worth to do in Rome as well. And we thought London was worth about 5-6 days on our own. My question: how many days is Hong Kong "worth" for a first time visitor? How many days would you want to spend there if you had the choice (and before you ran out of things to do)? |

If you're going to stay right on Hong Kong island, then three or four days is plenty of time to see everything at your own pace, including Stanley. (Don't miss the market in Stanley. It's worth the trip across the island just for that.) If you intend to travel across the harbor to the mainland, to see the Kowloon area, and some of the outlying areas beyond that, I'd add more days to suit your schedule. If you're a shopper, all bets are off.

If you plan on going back in a year or two, then 4-7 days would be good for the first trip. If this will be your only trip (plans "DO" change" !!!), then you will need a minimum of a week. there is MUCH to see and do.

I was just there in December and I also went to Macau. I think you can skip Macau. You can read up on Macau and decide for yourself.
Hong Kong is a fascinating and fast-paced city with a fantastic public transportation system. You will find plenty of things to do there, so I think 4 - 7 days is a good estimate. I love Hong Kong and would return in a hearbeat. -David |
