What is "run of the house"?

Hi all,
I need some clarification of a term I have been seeing more often lately, run of the house. It is used when describing accomodation and I have no idea what that represents. I am sure someone here wil be able to enlighten me.
Thanks

Say I'm staying at a plush bed & breakfast inn. Can I go anywhere anytime I want -- i.e., have run of the whole house (except for other guests' individual suites)? Or do I have to limit my to & fro wanderings to my own suite plus certain designated areas (e.g., breakfast room, etc.)?

Resorts: 2 Aquamarine Villas, 1 Fxrun, an MP and now 2 EOY Waterside - and that's all (until the next time.... I promised)
It generally means - whatever rooms the hotel (house) has available when you check-in - you see this a lot with Priceline hotel reservations and usually means that you will get their standard rooms without a view - but not always, if those are all gone you may get a better room. Its amazing what a pleasant curtomer, a helpful check-in clerk can result in - you might get a fabulous room with the view. It just means you get what you get at their discretion.

or Alan's right and I'm wrong

I'm Guessing Barb Is Right.

Barb's explanation makes more sense to me than my own guesswork. The meaning of Run Of The House in that context would roughly parallel Run Of The Mill -- taking whatever comes off the line without getting to select.

Run Of The House

Hi
Thanks for the input, I'm thinking that what Barb explained makes sense to me. I'm not sure I would be very comfortable with that type of description, I like to be VERY sure of what I'm getting.
Barb, I'm not that far from you, I'm in the subdivision behind the Petro-Can at Bayview and Mulock. Small world eh?
Thanks

I always thought run of the house meant the best room available.

Nope, it's just what Barb said it was. Whatever is available when you arrive, not when you make your reservation. Sounds like it's really something doesn't it? It's not.
