New Orleans Jazz Fest
I'm thinking of going to the Jazz Fest this year. I've never been before. If anyone has, and has any suggestions or comments to make it a great trip, please share. In particular, I'll need a nice place to stay, and ideas about the best way to get around. TIA.

I loooooooooooove Jazz Fest. So much music you don't know which way to turn. It's all for a most reasonable price as well for all that music. The food booths also offer some outrageous tastes.
I have to admit, last time I went I was with some teacher friends. We were in NO for a convention and I dragged them along. Well, they walked around a bit but left me there after a while as they were bored. They are not the music fans that I am. So, it's not everyone's idea of the perfect way to spend the day. I recommend the Quarter House. It's timeshare, but we booked it as a rental rather than an exchange. Fantastic place on the edge of the French Quarter. |

Reserve Early
Get you airplane tickets and lodging nailed down now. NO fills up for the Jazz fest. Do not plan on an exchange. You will almost certainly not get it for Jazz Fest.
NO is hot that time of year. Make your in city transportation plans in advance. I do not know things like can you get parking, are taxis easy to get, are there shuttle buses. You need to find out because you do not want a long walk to return to your air conditioned hotel room. The Zagat guide is reliable for where to eat and you can get it on the internet for a small subscription fee. Plus the best restaurants in town sell food at the Fest itself. The music is more than great. Main problem is deciding what you have to pass up and what you can not bear to miss. Too many choices.

I have seen hotel rooms at fairly reasonable prices during that time of year. I personally have a unit at Jazz Fest that I often rent out. Last year I barely covered my annual fees. This year, I rented it for the amount of my fees and my special assessment, so I'm OK with that. Next year, I'll probably go again, rather than renting it out, and I'm glad I have it because exchanges at that time are difficult.
But they are not impossible. Before I owned my week, in 2005 I exchanged into the Plaza Suite Resort during Jazz Fest week and had a blast.

Many year since we went
It was many years ago that we went to the Jazz Fest at the fairgrounds, or race track or whatever it was. We loved it because we were into Cajun and bluegrass music already, and Dixieland jazz, and at that festival we discovered zydeco/Clifton Chenier and that has led us to many other fun music shows. Crowded, hot, lots of bands at several stages, lots of food booths.
We stayed at the Hotel Provincial on Chartres St that time. Would stay there again and reccommend it. They do have parking spaces for guests, a big plus. We drove to the festival grounds, plenty of parking there. If you don't have a car I think they do have shuttle buses but I am sure that is a crowded hassle. For the concerts at other locations you need tickets 'way ahead of time. |

Thanks for your responses. I may already be too late. I was able to secure reasonable airfare, but hotels are a different story. So many are already sold out. Has anyone stayed at any of the moderate hotels outside of the French Quarter, but still within easy walking distance, or on a trolley line?
