Car Rentals

Ok... I used to consider myself pretty adept at getting good (great) prices on car rentals up until recently.

Repeatedly, I search for prices and get messages that the location I am searching is sold out (from various rental websites... Alamo, Advantage, etc). It's not like it's the same location over and over - it's various places from Oakland to Mexico. It's kinda wierd (like the car rental Gods are frowning on me)!

What has changed in the last year that is affecting this?

Thanks!

Kim

Hi Kim,
I too usually am able to get good prices. The best I could do for our upcoming trip in May, to Oahu, was on II! Who would have thunk? They've NEVER been the lowest before!
Good luck!

I also had a hard time in Salt Lake City for Feb 23 rental...I went with Dollar and I have never used them before. I got a cheaper rate from their own web site that I could with Priceline

Gee, I just signed in to search for tips on getting a good car rental deal! I've been trying to find something in Tampa for April. It seems I get email, links, whatever that have very low prices but when I search those prices are no where to be found! I am trying the individual company sites along with priceline, hotwire, car rental.com, and anything else I can come up with!
I'm usually a pretty good bargain hunter too but no luck so far........

Try www.rentalcarmomma.com . I just got a great price from Thrifty on their site, less than any other for Ft. Myers, FL.

Enterprise--will they really pick you up?

I'm looking for a 1 day, 4-hours, rental in Atlanta. I see that the rates (I'll be charged for two days) are twice as much at the airport. At other Enterprise locations the rates are about half what the airport location charges. Would they pick us up at the airport from one of the other rental locations? Has anyone had Enterprise pick you up at an airport? Not the regular airport shuttle to the airport Enterprise rental desk, but picked up in the actual car you are renting from Enterprise at a different rental location, off-airport?

I think this is a great idea Karen! It's something I would do (with David grumbling the whole time)!

Hi, we leave for Orlando on March 14. For the last several months, I have been trying to rent a car through Priceline. I have always had great luck in the past. This time, I have had no luck. Even though I have doubled the amount of money that I usually spend. In the past I have traveled during April school vacation and Thanksgiving week. I am now getting nervous, so I just paid fulll freight, to ensure Our family has a car. Any ideas why this time is different? Sue

I have heard that this is about the time of year that Hertz (and possibly others)n starts offering specials on one-way rentals out of Florida. This is presumably in an effort to get cars to other areas that are now becoming higher-demand (I think they do this every winter). The end result is that there are less cars in the Florida markets. This doesn't do much to answer how come rates are higher this year than in past years, but it probably is playing a role.

Check carrentals.com and biddingfortravel.com etc. and find the best rate possible, and then bid on priceline. We could get decent deals like that. I was able to get $13/day (plus taxes etc.) for our visit to Las Vegas last week.

The reason car rentals are getting harder / more expensive is the manufacturers have cut back on fleet sales in an attempt to lessen their losses. They used to run the factories sort of independent of sales and dumped the excess on the rent a car companies.

Cheers

I have used Enterprise for years and yes , they should pick you up. Ive never needed a airport pickup but I have been picked up and taken where I needed to go. They also gave me a ride to my requested designation when I returned the car. I think the airport rates are higher than other locations.

The week end rates are outstanding. I went to Florida for the weekend and paid about 40 dollars for a Fri- Mon rental. If you have your own insurance you can usually decline that. If youb have a reservation call them when you get there and they will come and get you.

I would pick the nearest location outside of the Airport. They didnt pick me up in the car that I was renting but in one of their cars.
