Question about ticket buying timing

Hi all- I have yet another Hawaii ticket airfare question...but it is not quite the same as I have seen recently on here.

We are going to Hawaii in late June-early July (LAX- Maui) and I would like to know if I should buy the tickets now for what they have them listed for (around $550+ rt) or if they are likely to take a dip down pretty soon. I have been watching them and they keep extending the dates on the sales..they just did an airfare sale through June 10... Historically, do they mark them down during that time of year, or not, because of kids out of school etc. I heard that someone got them for under $400 in late June last year.

Just wondering if its as good as its gonna get at @ $550...

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I go to Hawaii quite often, hardly ever see airfare from where I am coming from lower than $550. I purchased my tickets in Jan. for my Aug. trip and saw a $10 per ticket dip, so there may be hope. However, as the warmer weather approaches I see the prices rise for favored vacation spots. So, being the cautious person that I am, I would purchase soon.

If you go to www.kayak.com you can look at charts that show what prices have done for the last 90 days. (you can also see the cheapest days to fly).

No guarantee that the fares won't go lower but you can at least see what the trend has been and make a decision.

We are going in May and I watched fares for about a month and decided they were as low as they ere going to go. I bought my tickets last weekend - hopefully it was the right decision.

If I had fixed dates for travel, with accommodation already booked, I would be very nervous about waiting in the hope that flight prices drop. If travel is at a time of high demand it's doubly risky as you may not get a flight at all for the day you require.

prices

Planes run on fuel. Fuel prices are up and going to up further. I would not wait. Furthermore, most airlines allow you to refare if the price drops.

Thanks everybody for your answers. I didn't know that you can get a reimbursement on ticket prices if they go lower.... definitely takes some of the risk out.

We will probably be buying them sooner rather than later then.

A word of caution for re-ticketing. We purchased a ticket from Aer Lingus and the price dropped $100 so I called about the fare drop. I was told I could get the lower price, but it would cost $100 to re-ticket! So, I wouldn't count on that.

I know Southwest Airlines does allow you to re-book at the lower price with no penalty. You will just have a credit to use within a your of the day you booked your original airfare.
