Can anyone out there share with me their experience on filing a claim on the Travel Guard insurance? We've got 3 weeks to do a retrade or to cancel our reservation and file a claim. If the filing a claim is a cumbersome experience, then we may just do the retrade.

Thanks for any advice.

There have been some positive posts here about Travel Guard. However, there have also been some nightmarish tales here involving several insurance providers, generally relating to a misunderstanding or difference of opinion over what types of situations are covered by the policy.

I believe everything depends on why you are canceling. To be covered, you must cancel for a "covered reason", as explained in the policy.

As examples, if an immediate family member died a few days before your trip, sending a copy of the death certificate along with your claim should bring an immediate payment. In the middle, illness accompanied by a letter from a doctor stating that you can't travel, would likely mean Travel Guard would investigate. At the bottom, canceling because of loss of employment or because a boss said you can't take your scheduled vacation would mean no reimbursement, because those are examples of non-covered reasons for cancellation under the Travel Guard policy.

It really depends on what claim you are making. If it's for hurricane, it's tough as the resort has to officially close the resort for you to make a claim. I think the max is $1000.

If it's for health problems, that can be documented by your doc that shows no pre-existing condition 3 months prior to when you bought the insurance, you will probably get your claim through OK. The amount of the claim is based on the 'daily' published rental rate of the timeshare for the 7 nights you are there ... in most cases that's more than $1000.

Read the contract over carefully ... and call them if you have any questions about the claim. I made a claim with them twice, once for myself (gallbladder attack) and once for having to stay behind due to close family illness, and in both cases I got $1000 without too much difficulty as soon as the Docs filled in their part of the forms. One of the doc's charged me $40 which I thought was a little unfair...the other charged me $5 for faxes they had to make of their record sheets.
