Explosion in Kilauea Crater

That's pretty wild, because this is not a remote area of the park. This is the main (dormant) crater in the park and the hotel, visitors centers, and military camp are right on the edge of the crater and people hike across it on a daily basis.

If I've got the location correct, the viewing area affected is where these photos were taken:

..This is the main (dormant) crater in the park and the hotel, visitors centers, ...
Funny that you mention it like that.
As we were standing on the edge of the crater reading the sign about how it is dormant, watching all of the steam rising up...
Trina said " Dormant my ..... How do they know that it isn't going to explode..."

Side note: in 1866 it was a pool of lava - See Mark Twain's story below.

On another note: We wouldn't be getting into any of those steam heated pools anytime soon...

[slight tremor]
Terry, USGS Crew: Did anybody feel that?
[large tremor throws them about]
Paul Dreyfus: I felt that.

We suspect that, based on our 20 years experience trying to see the volcano in action, in July one of two things will happen because we will be there.
It will go to sleep and be not much to see or
The area will remain closed and/or there will be flight restriction so that we can't fly over it.

Disclaimer

This panorama is a composite of three images from a temporary research camera positioned in the observation tower at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. At times, clouds and rain obscure visibility. The camera is subject to sporadic breakdown, and may not be repaired immediately. The camera is observing an area that is off- limits to the general public because of significant volcanic hazards.
