After reading all the recent bad press about the potentially bad stuff in the municipal water supplies across the US, my wife and I are considering a whole house filtering system. As you can imagine, the internet is full of sites that offer various systems at various prices; quite a few of those don't appear to have the highest quality information, if you know what I mean. So, once again, I am turning to the very knowledgeable TUG membership for some sage advice and experiences.

To clarify, we are not necessarily looking for water softeners or iron removal systems, because our municipal water supply does not seem to require that. I think what we really want to do is remove sediment, chlorine and other chemical components, without a lot of pressure drop. Space is not a problem, because the system cna be located in our basement.

As a related question, where should I send some water samples for testing that will give me reliable and objective results without a big sales pitch for whatever system they sell?

As always, TIA.

I called my county well permit division and asked who they used for testing water samples from wells. They had a few names and I contacted one of the labs directly. Very professional.

I ended up going with a Hague system - this is the third one we have used - and I must say I am VERY pleased. They build the complete filtration system according to what you have in your water - no more no less. It is also very water efficient in that the backflush is "as needed" and does not use tons of water to do it.

We recently put in a whole house R/O system because of the water quality of our well...and Florida water in general. Ours has a sulfur smell and the salt content was very high. With DH on dialysis and having heart problems, we felt it was needed. We used Aqua Care, but don't know if they are nation wide or not. Aqua care also built ours to what we needed. It is so nice to have no spots on glasses, better tasting water (better than bottled). I would definitely check with some of the water conditioning companies in your area.

We were worried about our drinking water and bought a reverse osmosis unit from lowes. Our first R.O. unit came from Culligan. It was a rental unit. The one from Lowes is about the same as the Culligan and was around $200.00 and 90 minutes.
