Prague v. Copehagen
We're planning to Europe in the summer of 2009 on Marriott points. For sure seven nights will be spent in London. We are thinking of five nights in either Prague or Copenhagen. Which city, and why, would TUG people recommend?

Tough question. I'm sure both cities would be great. Opposite cultures. The Danes speak English and are very friendly. But I'm sure the Czechs are too. My sympathies that you are in such a dilemma.

While I like Copenhagen, it is just not in the same league as Prague, with all of its surviving medieval buiidings. There are some great day trips out of Prague to places like Karlstein castle and Cesky Krumlov.

We like both cities, but would definitely choose Prage over Copenhagen.
Wish I had that decision to make now. |

never been to prague....but LOVED copenhagen.
was a quick (and relatively cheap) train ride to many other awesome cities as well if you are going to be there for a bit.

I've never been to Copenhagen, but heard that it is very nice. I loved Prague -- one of the most beautiful European cities I've seen yet. Made the mistake of going to Vienna after that, and Vienna paled in comparison. The medieval castle and monuments are lit up at night, making it look like a fairytale kingdom. It is one of the only European cities not heavily bombed in WWII, so a lot of its old buildings still stand. Many of the people there speak English. It is also much, much cheaper than Copenhagen.
The food was so-so, and the beer was pretty good. Nice places to stay during prime tourist season (June-October) can be pricey, though.

As others have said - 2 completely different places, and a tough decision.
I've been to both and if I had to choose, I'd pick Prague .Really depends on what tyou like and what you're looking for on a holiday. |

I was struck by your post... in the last two years my best friend and I have taken two trips on Marriott points, first to Copenhagen and then to Prague. I adored both places. We went during the first week of November and the weather in Copenhagen was much better than in Prague. I think you should check the weather for your stay. I hear Prague can be beastly hot in the summer, so you might want to consider that. You can't go wrong with either destination, there is much to see and do in either location. When we were in Copenhagen we took a half hour train ride into Sweden and visited some towns. In Prague we stayed mostly in the city, with one day trip to Terezin. In either city, you will have a wonderful holiday!

Been twice to Prague
Praha is lovely ... but you can also take a cheap roundtrip bus 2 hours west to Karlovy Vary for less than $25 ... rent "Last Holiday" with Queen Latiffia ... and stay 1/2 block from her Grand Pupp Hotel (real name, see web page) for less than $100 per night.
Rates in Eastern Europe drop after Nov 15. Weather can vary, but it is mostly sunny, with some possibility of snow showers. |

Thanks everyone for your advice. I still haven't decided, but I think that my wife would prefer Copenhagen.
As an aside, we're off to Chicago this weekend staying one night for free using the certificate from Marriott for having the black card. |

One other consideration is that the Czech Republic will be forced to adopt the euro as part of its agreement in joining the EU. When this happens, prices will likely go up substantially there, so it is good to visit now before that occurs. Denmark, on the other hand, is part of old Europe where countries had an option on whether to join the euro or not, and Danes voted to keep their kronor instead, so prices should stay about the same.

I just got back from Prague. What a city! Weather was iffy but had great walks, tours (hop on and off buses.) Buy 1-3 day passes that is used for all transportation-now that is a deal. Most European countries beat us on public transportation, especially the tube. Enjoy
