One-way from SLC to PHX

DD is searching for low airfare one-way to Phoenix in October. She is frustrated because most of the seach engines insist on a return date for round-trip prices. She is upset because the one-way fares are over $100 (travelocity came up with $110) and since she flew RT to LA last year for $160 she thinks the price should be much lower for one-way to Phoenix. She is livid that prices go up each time she checks.

I tried to explain to her that distance has nothing to do with airfare and that fuel prices have gone up since last year (oil went up again today). She is not a happy camper. When DD is not happy, ain't nobody happy.

Any suggestions for finding lower airfare or for having a reasonable discussion with a very frustrated (and cash poor) young woman?

Has she checked Southwest, which won't show up on travelocity? They allow one-way booking with no penalty and they do fly between SLC and Phoenix. It does look like a one-way is still around $100 though. With fuel prices rising I think it's going to be more difficult to find those "cheap" fares these days. If she is somewhat flexible on the date she may be able to find something cheaper on the Southwest site than what I was seeing.

Thanks, Luanne. We cannot be flexible on the date--it's for a family wedding. I didn't think we'd find a cheaper fare but it was worth a shot. If anyone would know, it would be a tugger.

All the airline web sites I use (Delta, American, Useless Air) allow one way fares.

As far as explaining airline pricing, how about this. Jimmy Choo's Shoes cost megabucks but Payless shoe stores have perfectly adequate footwear for less than 1% of the price of Choo's. Everybody charges what they can get for the goods. Just like the price of a ticket, if all they can get is $160 for the round trip but they can get $100 for a one way, that's what they charge. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I keep asking myself, why don't they teach basic economics in school anymore.

Cheers

When there is no-or limited competition on the desired route, the airlines can charge pretty much what they want. For those two points, Delta/SkyWest and AmericaWest/USAir are about the only game in town.

Edit: oops, include www.southwest.com in that group to PHX, and they are not searcheable in the usual air travel sites.

Thanks, everyone. I should have been clearer on the one-way search functions. She was trying through some that are supposed to find the lowest fares among carriers. Individual airline sites will show one-way fares but not some of the comparative sites.

I think we should just go ahead and book now since oil prices may continue to rise and even if they don't, I don't see these fares dropping much. It's not like we're talking hundreds of dollars. She might save 20 dollars (and that's alot of money to her at this time) but I don't think we should fret over that.

DH was willing to use his Delta FF miles to fly her but I said that would be a waste of miles! We'll probably end up paying for it but I wanted DD to get the experience of at least trying to find some reasonable fares.

Travelocity, Otbitz, Expedia etc all allow you to select a one-way option. Usually, it's a smaller link in the general area of where you put in your flight info.
