My DH built an outdoor patio years ago with a roof system using plastic sheeting. It comes in long wavy strips and is screwed down to the wooden braces. Over the last 20 years we have replaced it at least 4 times. The plastic does not survive long in our winter climate. Now it needs to be replaced again and I am trying to convince him to try a more permanent solution. Ashphalt tile won't work because of the low slope ratio and I am thinking a metal roof. It will darken our attached kitchen but I am willing to live with that . Any other suggestions. Thanks.

We had an aluminum awning on our previous house. It lasted through tough North Eastern winters. Our awning was manufactured and installed by an awning company. To bring light into the house, we had an 18" panel of fiberglass placed across the whole width of the awning.

You could add skylights.

An aluminum awning should work

As a previous poster mentioned, an aluminum awning should work for you. We had an aluminum awning on our 26' x 10' (or maybe 12'?) and it was still in decent shape when we took it down for an addition (we ended up putting on a 'real' roof with a good pitch because we added up).

The aluminum awning was only supported on the outside edge in the summer with their permanent poles but in the winter we had poles that we bolted into the top frame in the middle of the patio (three across) to take some of the weight of the snow load that was sure to be up there during the big snows. They actually swayed a little when there was no snow up there (hung about 1/2" off the ground when connected) but they were 'tight' when the snow was more than 2-3 inches.

They come is many colors and styles. Can be loud in the pelting rain (but I sorta liked it and it gave us a warning to make sure all the windows were closed).

I was going to ask why you don't use aluminum. They look very nice, in a sort of 1950s way, and they last and last here in NJ. You can get different colors or just white or off-white. We had the one over our front door replaced a few years ago (only because we did work on the front of the house and the existing aluminum awning was damaged in the process).
