Travel warning if you're going to Whistler this weekend

There has been a rockslide that has closed the highway from Vancouver to Whistler. They're saying that "room sized rocks" are on the highway and while initial estimates put the reopening of the highway at tomorrow, tonight on the news they're saying it could be Monday.

There is an alternate route but it would add significant time onto your trip. I'm not even sure what the route is, but basically just a heads up if your timeshare travels take you to Whistler this weekend.

It has just been reported that you have to go up the Fraser Canyon - through Lytton and Pemberton. This is an eight hour detour! There are many frustrated people in Whistler now. They have said that the highway may not open for five or six days! It is a very bad rock slide.

I hope it doesn't turn out like our last big winter rock slide. It damaged Highway 2 so badly that part of the road disappeared from the cliff side and it has been about 4 years and it still isn't fixed! I'm looking forward to going to both Vancouver and Whistler, and I'm sure there is much higher priority there than where I live, but....

Rock slides or washouts along the Sea to Sky Hwy, are a fairly common occurrence.

It's a beautiful drive from North Van to Squamish, but it's a hard road to maintain since it's squeezed between the cliffs and the sea.

wow..it also shut down the railway. Thus, people will need to fly via helicoptor as the fastest way to travel.

I just called the Rocky Mountaineer as we have reservations in August. I was advised that there were no fatalities and that the railroad is expected to be operational in about August 5, 2008. I was also advised that they were making efforts to compensate those travelers whose plans have been interrupted due to the landslide.

Thanks to all you Tuggers for keeping me posted.

Just read in the Vancouver Sun that the highway will be fully operational this evening.
