We will be flying into Philadelphia 8/17 and staying for 9 nights. Will spend time in Atlantic City and other beach cities. Any suggestions for a cute town near New York City, perhaps a Bed and Breakfast. My husband would stay in a Motel 6, likes the price. However I like the Marriott style of a vacation.

Marriott hotels are abundant in North Jersey. You have close access to NYC for day trips anywhere from exit 9 (new brunswick) on the NJ turnpike and north from there to the Lincoln Tunnel. There are some nice towns off exits 9 and 10 like Highland Park, and Edison TWP.

Short Hills Hilton in Short Hills NJ < 30 miles from city. It is a very reasonable very upscale hotel with free limo service to the very upscale mall in town with highend dining. This is more like a 4 Seasons than a Hilton. We usually pay about $200/night there.

I guess I really don't know what is meant by a "cute" town.

If I ever write a travel book I will categorize all towns and cities as either "nice", or "not so nice".

Cute??? NYC, North Jersey - the grit and grimmy urban suburbs? Concrete jungles? NJ Turnpike? NJ Parkway? LI Expressway?

Cape May, NJ is cute. Asbury Park, NJ is not. Cape Cod is cute. Coney Island is not.

Stay in NYC (Manhatten) and get classy, YES.

If you end up considering the city you can get some good NYC rates on www.travelzoo.com and on Priceline. If Priceline is the choice the cheapest night to get in NYC is a Sunday, according to the experts on www.biddingfortravel.com so you may think about that option. The M-F days are most expensive so maybe you could shoot for a Sat/Sun stay. Not sure of anything cure in Jersey. I just returned from visiting my daughter in NYC and got a decent rate of $150 at the Hudson Hotel on Columbus Circle. It is on Travel zoo for $189 a night and that includes a voucher for 2 drinks- our drinks were $35 so that is a nice freebie! I thought it was fine but the room was very tiny. Many other options are on Priceline, though.

N.J. is quite misunderstood. North Jersey, has some of the wealthiest and most beautiful suburban areas in the country. Actually, N.J north, central, or south has some of the most beautiful areas of the country. Short Hills, smoke rise, colts neck, etc. etc. are some of the wealthiest places in the country.

Now, I do think that staying in Manhatten is a GREAT idea if you can afford it. There is a beautiful Marriott in the theater district, in fact it has its own theater, where we have stayed numerous times. I highly recommend it but reservations should be made as soon as possible.

Thanks for all your interesting suggestions and thoughts. We just moved to Austin from Southern Ca. so are anxious to explore the East Coast. Any other suggestions or favorite restaurants would be appreciated

And welcome to the central time zone and being east of the Rocky Mountains.

There are many cute places on the east coast. Bar Harbor Maine. Annapolis, Maryland. St Michael's, MD. Cape May, NJ. Stowe, VT. Lancaster, PA (PA Dutch area)

There are quite a few regional and charming cities, too. Philadelphia, Pa. Baltimore, MD. Boston, MA. Miami, FL

Then there are the world class cities: NYC, Washington, DC.

I am sure others will offer their suggestions, too.
