Another landmark for a free visit is the New York Public Library - www.nypl.org

If you go be sure to go up the the Rose Main Reading Room - I think it's on the third floor. It's one of the largest rooms in the US without a dome, interior columns, or steel-reinforced walls to support the ceiling. A breath-taking room.

Another free perk of a visit to the NYPL is the artwork on the corridor walls
and in some of the various library rooms. I don't know if the artwork is permanently displayed or is part of rotating exhibitions. When we were there a couple of years ago they had one corridor lined with different portraits of George Washington done throughtout his lifetime. Also there were portraits done by British soldiers during the Revolutionary War of New York Harbor and environs. It was a great free art exhibit.
