Foot Problems

I have a big bunion on my right foot that gives me lots of pain at times and a Morton's neuroma (sp?) on the same foot. I am considering having foot surgery to correct these problems as they are beginning to impact my life. I have had 2 cortizone shots in the neuroma but they don't last long. Any pros or cons on either surgery and do you go to a new, young foot doc or someone older with more experience? Thanks for any info. Linda

I have a girlfriend who had the surgery for a Morton's neuroma and she said it was a painful recovery but it got better and the pain went away. That's all I know on the subject.....

I'm lucky not to have bunion issues, but have been dealing with Morton's Neuroma. I had the cortisone shot and it seemed to take care of it for me. I still get twinges but can usually tell they are related to what shoes I've been wearing and have been able to make adjustments that allow it to get better. I especially feel it when my feet get cold, and found I was greatly helped by wearing a pair of Merrill fleece lined clogs outside in the winter and warm slippers inside.

My brother a neuroma, too, and had to have surgery because the shots didn't help him. He ended up with a toe that sticks up somewhat; I'm not sure if that was an issue of the quality of his surgeon, or just one of those weird things that can happen. I've been trying to avoid surgery in any case.

I know people who have had successful bunion surgery and were pleased with those results.

I had surgery for neroma .. about 12 years ago. I only wish that I had had it sooner. A few days after surgery, my foot was better than it had been in years.

Bunion surgery was very painful. Had it 20+ years ago. Found childbirth far easier and less painful!

I had bunion surgery 2 years ago on my right big toe. I didn't find it painful but my toe is still numb. I went to physical therapy but never regained the feeling in my toe. If I had to do it over - I wouldn't - but other people I know are satisfied with their results. Best wishes.

I had bunion surgery on my left foot a little over a year ago. Painful, yes, but in the long run worth it to me. Mine was so bad I couldn't find shoes that didn't kill me. For the first time in a very long time this summer, I wore "pretty" sandals instead of the Birkenstocks I had been wearing. This winter I am actually looking forward to shoe shopping. My doctor was older and very experienced and I found that reassuring.

I had the bunion surgery 2/6 and was on crutches for 2 weeks - I now am walking without crutches but I am using the "boot" for another week and a half. So far so good. I did not really have any pain other then trying to use those damn crutches. That was the worst part. Loving it so far!!!

Judy, thanks for the input. I am currently seeing a new foot dr and have an orthotic on order but the bunion wakes me in the night with pain. I had another shot for my neuroma but I still feel it. My foot dr said I will eventually have to have surgery for both but trying to find time to fit it in among all the timeshares we have planned is not a simple thing to do...a few weeks I could handle but if it turned into months, I'm not sure I would like that. I had bunion surgery on my left foot about 5 years ago. I don't regret it. While it wasn't a picnic, I wouldn't compare it to the pangs of labor. I had it done on a Friday afternoon and was working Monday morning. Caveat: I telecommute, so your mileage may vary. If I'd had to get in the car & drive and then hobble to the office, I'd probably have been off work for a couple of weeks. I wasn't supposed to put weight on it for about 4 weeks I think. I wasn't very obedient and got many scoldings from my doctor.

I used an older doctor whose bedside manor was less than charming, but he was very good. I'd just make sure whoever you get has done lots of them.

I had cryosurgery done for my morton's neuroma a couple of months ago. I had two sessions two weeks apart. It was sore for a while, but seems to be better now. Hopefully, this will take care of it.

My husband had the surgery for Morton's neuroma several years ago. He recommends having it done. Recovery wasn't bad and he was glad he had it done. He's had many surgeries of various kinds, and his advice has always been to "git 'er done" the sooner, the better.

I also work from home so I put the laptop right next to me on the couch and if I had to hop downstairs to do something I did. Mine was also on a Friday so the clients never even knew I was out of commission!! Love that commute. I can now at least walk without the boot - around the house - but if I go out I put it on - mainly for protection! I go back to the doctor a week from Wednesday so I imagine everything will be OK by then. The foot is still swollen but getting better in that aspect. :whoopie:
