"Fall Colours".2010!!!!

Hello Tugger's'******************** jimbosee,Melbourne Australia.I am doing some early work on* trip for 2010.I hope to use a Circle Pacific Airfare,from Australia to Bali,in April,then in September,possibly,depending on your help and advice,go from Bali to L/A-(Transit)Mexico 14 nights.New Orleans 7 nights.Hilton Heads 7 nightsCharleston 4 nightsNYC** 3* nights-------------- 7 nightsLas Vegas* 7 nightsHawaii(Big Island) 7 nights*** Return to Australia.As you can see by the above plan I have a blank week after NYC.this is so we can see your magnificent fall colours.By my plan,I will have us in position to see the fall colours,the week commencing Friday October 8th 2010.My question is,A)Should we go to The New England Counties.******************* B)Should we go to Wyoming,Yellowstone National Park,a huge bonus,say Jackson.Would the date be ok,given that you cannot judge nature,and where of the two areas,would you go.Looking forward to your ideas.Thanks Regards Jim Seedsman ****************************** jimbosee

Choosing between New England and out West is a tough call, but I can tell you that normally here in Vermont the week in October that you're talking about is generally right around peak foliage.

Having lived in New England for the past 23 years (prior to retiring this past summer), I certainly agree that the New England fall colors are gorgeous and that the October week you mention would be good timing.

However, if it's your only chance for a visit, I would opt for the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

Now, you can see the great variety of opinions on TUG....

Since I have lived all my life way out west, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and British Columbia (and a couple short sprints in central Canada and the US Midwest) and I have seen the scenery and the wildlife.....I would choose seeing the fall colors *our colours * of New England. My wife and I have wanted to go back east for a few years to view the beautiful fall scenery.

Jim, what a wonderful trip you have planned! I hope it all works out and you have a fantastic time!

I've lived on both coasts and seen most of the interior. Fall colors are great on either end of the country, and several places in the middle. East Coast forests tend to have more deciduous trees, and West Coast forests tend to have more evergreen trees. If I had ONE CHANCE of finding Fall color in a given week, I'd pick the East Coast, and focus on New England.

My logic is that the leaves will stay on the trees long enough to change color, providing the weather gets cold enough and there are no Fall storms to take them off. If one part of New England experienced a storm that took away the leaves, the chances are good you can get to another area fairly easily that will still have the colors you're after. On the West Coast, it can be quite a long distance between good color areas. If a storm took away the leaves in the area you're visiting, you might have a hefty drive ahead of you to get to another decent area.

Now, if anyone can teach me how to forecast the weather two years out, I think I'd be in line for a new career as a TV weatherman.

Come out to New England and get that weatherman's job. If you're right 50% of the time, you'll be a hit. I still remember one weather report I heard for RI. "If the storm stays off to our south we'll have sun; if the storm tracks north, we'll have rain". And to think they had to get a college degree for that report.
