I just read an old notice on another site warning that Playa Del Carman and the Riviera Maya are areas famous for credit card fraud. The article stated that first of all you should only use Bank ATMs - makes senes (Scotia Bank was recommended.) and that there were machines that looked like ATMs that when you swiped your card, you just got a message stating "out of service" or something like that. Then months later you get hit with huge charges.

It also stated that restaurants and shops were famous for reusing your card, swiping it twice, etc.

I've been to Cancun many times, but this will be my first time to the Riviera Maya area other than to take the ferry to Cozumel years ago.

Have others experienced credit card problems in this area? The article recommends using cash (preferalby pesos) as much as possible. Do you agree?

Thanks,

BigTom

In Mexico

in general we use our cc at the resort and maybe Wal-Mart.
We exchange dollars into pesos ( at the best rate we can find) and pay for everything else in pesos.
