Has anyone had experience booking flights out of Toronto into Kona? I've been researching airfare lately and it seems the best I can do is just under $1000 CAD per ticket. Travel will be from June 26-July 5, 2009. I've been trying to book Toronto to Kona on the 26th and then Maui to Toronto on July 5.
I looked into flights out of Buffalo and it's even worse.
Is this as good as it gets?
Thanks,
Debi
Debi,
Air right now to HI is very expensive, unless, its for flights before April. I have been watching airfare for the past how many months, and the lowest I could find direct from LAX to OGG (Los Angeles to Maui) is $680. The average price has been around $800. I keep thinking WTF. BTW, someone suggested Hawaiian Air, their prices have been the HIGHEST out of them all. Again, I'd look, and it'd be $700. Too much for me.
I have been using airfare watching sites, and it helps, but once you get the emails/updates, you have to be able to buy now. And sometimes, it comes with restrictions, or long layovers. Found cheap airfare for $490, but it had a 5 hour layover on HNL.
However, I also see prices slightly dropping. With a 2 hour layover, I could get a direct flight now, for about $480. Direct is still $690.
Did a quick search. Not sure if this is "good" or not. You can fly out of YYZ to OGG on United for $646 (decent hours, 1 layover, not long, etc). To me, for the distance you're flying, that's CHEAP. You may want to look into it. Then, I found some inter-island flights for $158 from OGG to KOA. Total price, $804.
The only problem with this, is that it's two flight segments, so you have to get our luggage, then check in somewhere else, AND you probably have to pay the luggage fees on all flights.
I got airfare for about $500 to OGG doing it this way for DH and I. We'll have to pay another $230 in luggage fees, but this is because we're bringing our golf clubs, which count as a 2nd piece. However, paying about $1230 versus $1500 or more (for better flights), well, I'll take it.
Good luck. Might wanna check UA now. The way I did it above, it means you only have to fly inter-island once, and ALL tickets are round-trip, instead of one-ways (since you're landing in KOA or ITA - Hilo, and leaving OGG), it means you can find better deals.
ETA: also check other inter-island providers. Island Air, Go Air, and one other, forgot what it was.
