The nicest place to stay in the Albuquerque area is the Hyatt Tamaya Resort, north of the city itself. It is on an Indian Reservation (lots of open space) along the Rio Grand River. Nice hiking path under very large trees along the river. Can be pricey, but if you qualify, the senior rate is not bad and we usually manage to get a pretty good rate on Priceline.com for guests. Check BiddingForTravel.com for current successful bids.
I second the tram recommendation. Also, there are interesting spots between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, such as Tent Rocks and Golondrinas along I-25 as well as along the "back way" or Turquoise Trail, east of I-25. If you had the time, a visit to Acoma Pueblo west of Albuquerque would be high on my list. If you do drive the Turquoise Trail you would be able to drive to the top of the Sandia Mountains from there rather than, or in addition to, taking the tram to the top.
