I am new to TUG. I've been a timeshare owner and RCI member for over 25 years. I recently found out that we are not allowed to rent exchanged RCI weeks. This was quite a shock to me since I can remember in many of the timeshare presentations the salesperson bragging about renting their weeks out. I even recall one salesman telling how he had exchanged a week to New Orleans during Super Bowl week many years ago and renting it for $2000. I would appreciate if anyone else can share stories of similar things that salespeople have told them. I believe this miss representation is widespread and nothing is being done to advise the timeshare buyer that they may be doing something against the rules. The end of November I received a letter from RCI advising me of the rules that exchange weeks cannot be rented. Now that I'm aware of that rule I have stopped any efforts of renting exchanged weeks. Has anyone else received this type of letter from RCI? Does anyone else have a suggested Forum for me to post this thread?

RCI doesn't want you competing with them seeing as they too rent out weeks. So yes, it's against the rules and you could lose your RCI membership for renting.

When timeshare salesmen talk about renting, they usually mean renting the weeks at the resort you purchase directly. That is permitted, and I guess it's possible to make a profit.. but considering the opportunity cost, I'd say it's highly unlikely and not worth the effort. Buy a timeshare to use at that resort, or trade. And if your MF's are already too much.. then trade only as you can get back into your home resort cheaper :)

The RCI prohibition against renting out weeks which you do not own but have instead obtained via the RCI "exchange" process is a long standing, very specifically written item within the terms and conditions of RCI (...and also Interval International) membership. There have been documented instances of "would-be renters of exchange weeks" being turned away upon check-in at the resort, as well as reports of suspension of the membership rights of the violating RCI member. (Whether being suspended from RCI is necessarily a bad thing is an entirely separate discussion.....). ;) RCI, being increasingly involved in the rental market themselves, certainly doesn't want the competition, as already noted by another poster above.

A lying salesmen is also nothing new. If his lips were moving at all during the presentation you attended, chances are he was mistaken and / or knowingly lying. Sales weasels seem genetically incapable of speaking (or even recognizing) truthful statements.

I wouldn't worry about the letter from RCI. It's essentially a formal warning to you of little immediate consequence --- unless you try to rent out exchanges again in the future, in which case they will likely terminate your RCI membership. I also wouldn't worry about posting further about your recent discovery since, with no disrespect intended, the prohibition against renting out RCI or II exchanges is generally widely known and clearly understood, being as it is overtly expressed in writing within their respective printed terms and conditions of membership.

You can rent out weeks you own, as you may see fit, but this right is limited to the week(s) for which you are actually the actual owner of record. You can't rent out a week you don't own in the first place, but have instead merely obtained via an "exchange" from either RCI or II.
