We had an awesome week Feb. 8-15 at the Timber Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. What can I say but location, location, location. We loved how it was central to so many things, especially the slopes. We were on the fourth floor of the Alpine building overlooking the spas. I was originally assigned a different room in the original building with a view of Harrah's parking lot. The desk clerk was very accommodating about trying to meet my request for an upper floor pool view in Phase II or III. It sure paid to speak up. We were very pleased with the service we received from everyone at the hotel. Each time we requested an item like towels or tp from housekeeping, it was brought promptly and we always got a follow up call to make sure that we had received the item.

We weren't bothered at all about attending a timeshare presentation. The concierge did talk us into an "owner's update" when we inquired about a location for tubing. We could have easily said no, but we decided it was worth the $150 in Visa check cards he offered. We had a great saleslady who didn't pressure us at all. We made our position clear from the get go that we had no interest in purchasing another week. Two more individuals had to talk to us before we could be officially released with our compensation. They went through the motions as if they were required to, but we didn't feel any pressure from them either.

In all, it was a very positive experience, but there were a few negatives. It was the smallest 2 bedroom I have stayed in and it was quite crowded in the living area with seven of us. The built-in sectional was not very comfortable, nor were the sofa sleepers. Next time I will bring a topper of some sort. The fan ran continuously, even when it wasn't heating, and blew a draft right at the dining table. We had to turn it off when we were sitting at the table. There were no fans in the bathrooms at all, and I would have preferred a separate vanity area.

We had my son's girlfriend's six year old daughter with us, and she took part in several of the scheduled activities. They had things going on all day every day. Most had a fee, but it was reasonable. My son and his GF enjoyed a night out on Valentine's Day for only $25 for four hours. She was fed, watched a movie, and made Valentine crafts. It was the most activities I have seen at a resort. Several especially for teens too.

I will try to answer any specific questions that you may have.

When you were at the sales presentation, did they look busy? Did they tell you how many incentives points for purchasing?

I'm glad you had a good time. It's a beautiful place.

Yes, they were busy I would say, and no they didn't tell us anything about incentive points. The women said that she was going to try to sell us on the points but when we told her how many we have (many) and that we don't use them, she didn't know where to go next. We talked some about the devaluation of points last month. She tried to say that that wasn't really the case, that they made an improvement to the point system. She said that previously, only 10% of a hotel's inventory was available to use with points and people had trouble getting reservations. Now she said that 100% of a hotel's inventory is available to use with points, so it is much easier to get in where you would like. I'm not really schooled on the whole points thing. Trading has worked very well for us so far, so we haven't explored that option much yet.

Did you find a good place for tubing? We will be there in a few weeks and it sounds like it would be fun. Are there any sled hills close by?

thanks

We didn't wind up going tubing. From what I understand, the best place would have probably been Sierra at Tahoe http://www.sierraattahoe.com/info/winter/tubing.asp. We had been thinking of going to Hansen's Resort, http://www.hansensresort.com/, just based on what I found online, but the concierge said that he thought it was more of a kiddie hill. I'm not sure though. Sierra at Tahoe is quite a distance. There were some park and play spots on our way up off 50. That's about the extend of my knowledge on the subject.

Do you get a discount for skiing if you are an owner?
Not that I am aware, unless it is your compensation for attending the sales pitch. Heavenly and Marriott are not affiliated. You do get free valet parking for one car if you are a Marriott Vacation Club owner, which is a savings of $22/day.

I found an incredible deal on lift tickets online at www.funjet.com. Nothing else even came close. We got 3 day passes for $144. That is only $48/day. The regular price during the period of time we were there was $82/day. The only other discounts that I am aware of are through SaveMart Supermarkets, but it is only a $12 savings.

You received $150??? We just took the "tour" a month ago and received a $100 VISA gift card. I agree about no pressure and we went through two reps before getting our gift card. We then used it at the Chart House on Kinsgbury Grade which was really nice. Well worth the 75 minutes we were on the tour!

You do not get any discounts at Heavenly for being an owner. Check SafeMart...they have Heavenly discounted lift tickets. We went to the one in Tahoe City and saved a bundle. They also had a three day lift ticket that was discounted even further than mentioned in this link although they might be sold out of those:

Also check Snowbomb. There are several Lake Tahoe resorts that offer discounts through this site without having to buy the Card. Not Heavenly though.

From what I understand, $100 is the standard award. The concierge told us that if we took the 1:30 PM time slot, we would receive an additional $50. Apparently, the mid-day slots are harder to fill. It actually worked out better for our schedule then, and the extra $50 was icing on the cake.

Valleykat,

Do you own there? or were you able to get an exchange? if so how long did take you to get a confirmation and so on....

Have you stayed in (or looked at) other resorts at Lake Tahoe? Would Timber Lodge be your first choice?

No, we don't own at Timber Lodge. We own at Newport Coast. We exchanged through II. It only took a few weeks. I was very surprised to get the week prior to President's Day weekend. We always try to reserve weeks that will be good traders and have been very successful. I can't say for sure, but I think we traded with a Spring break week.

Can't help you out here. This was our first trip to SLT. From my research prior, I would say that TL or GR are at the top of most people's lists. We could have used a little more room and might consider GR next time for that reason, but their pool area was definitely not comparable to TL.

In South Lake Tahoe I would think Timber Lodge would be #1 if you are going to be skiing/boarding. The walk-up access to the Gondola is the best. Also check out the Ridge in Stateline NV. Also accessible to Heavenly via chairlift. Lake Tahoe vacation resort looked nice as well. If you want North Lake Tahoe Hyatt high Sierra Lodge in Incline Village, NV or one of the Squaw properties would get high marks. Check TUG ratings as well.

In the summer the drawback to TL is that you are a ways from the lake so if you want lakeside I would not go for it. I would pick TL over GR just because the 1BR+ units have washer and dryer in the units.

Question for Valley...how were the hottubs and pools while you were there? We were there 1/17-1/24 and the hottubs were VERY sudsy...somethimes even brown suds!!! Also the pool was a little too cool for my taste.

I can't speak for the pool, as I never stepped foot in it. I only went to the hot tubs once. The bubbles weren't working in the one we were in at the time, but I did see that that was remedied. My DH went daily for at least an hour. He didn't complain whatsoever about them being sudsy or dirty. They were very crowded every day during the late afternoon/early evening.

Question for Marc- We're planning a fall trip to Lake Tahoe, so our focus will be more on hiking, day trips, etc. Your thoughts on best location for that?
I've read the Tug reviews, but never having been to Lake Tahoe, it's kind of hard to get a "feel" for what the area looks like. I'd like to stay somewhere with pretty views/grounds....
Thanks, Deb
(PS..I see your next trip is Barony..have fun, it's a great resort!)

I had never been to Tahoe before a month ago so as to fall activities...not sure what location is best. I know the area around Heavenly Village (where TL is) is less active than in the heart of winter. Other may be able to chime in as to what is open/closed during that time. As for the North Shore I have never stayed there but I would say that South Lake Tahoe is the most "hopping" part of the lake with lots of things to do. You cannot go wrong there!

We are looking forward to Barony as well!!!!

We like the Adventure Mountain for tubing - it is up on Echo Summit and used to be part of the NPS. They charge $15 per carload and you do have to bring your own tube or sled. It's a much safer venue than Strawberry Junction (on the way to Reno) where we saw multiple minor injuries and one ugly leg fracture the last time we were there.

The pool is quite warm, probably around 90 degrees - my 70 yr old mother swam her 100 laps every day that we were there. Jacuzzis are a piping 104. We were also offered $150 for an owner's presentation, but deferred as I find the Tahoe sales staff to be pretty high pressure as well as determined to keep you there past the 90 minutes if possible.

Cheaper lift tickets can be found at Save Mart but not the ones on the hill as they say Heavenly considers them too much competition. The Save Marts in Reno or Bay area have them, as do area Costco and REI seasonally. The hands-down best deal, even better than FunJet, is the Zumiez.com promo pack that contains a T-Shirt, magazine subscription and 2-4-1 voucher for the total cost of $25. They are sold out online for this year but at last check several Zumiez bay area stores still had a few.

IMHO, the Timberlodge has improved leaps and bounds over our last visit there in '08. There is new management - old one went home at last, and the staff are tip top professional and the premises are clean and maintained.
I know where the absolute best unit is also but am not telling!

I've stayed at another hotel in Lake Tahoe before I purchased Timber Lodge. We stayed at the Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort and it was very nice. Its a gold crown on the RCI system. It had a very nice on site restaurant, valet, bar in the lobby, indoor pool and the people were very friendly. It is located on the lake and my little boys loved throwing bread crumbs to the ducks by the lake.

The downside is that its a 15 minute walk to the heavenly area. We didn't mind. It was during one of those walks that we saw Timber Lodge and ASKED for a presentation. Both us and our friends bought on the spot.
