A couple of more HHI questions

My wife & I will be visiting HHI the end of May this year & have a few questions. I have been reading past post to try and sort things out but have not found answers to the following questions. We will be there during the Holiday week and wanted to get a feel for how busy the Island is at that time. We only visited HHI once before in mid Sept. a few years ago and had a great time. Things did not seem overly busy then. No problems with traffic or with dinner reservations. How does it compare with May and does the Memorial Holiday make things worse. I would imagine that May is a busy month for the Island.

I read some about the weather & it appears that it will be almost a mirror image of Sept. with a slight chance of less rain so that is not a big concern.

Also we will be staying at Waterside by Spinnaker. From what I have read here most seem to enjoy the resort. Good size accommodations, clean, good location. We will have a 2 br, 2 bath unit I believe in building 5400 with a lagoon view. Most reviews state it is about a 10 min walk to the beach from the Waterside. From waht I remember from the last time in the Island the resort is just off the main road. Is the walk to the beach on a path or the main road? I seem to remember bike paths being built on the main road near the resort. Just want to know if the 10 min walk is a safe one.

Last question - are there any special functions, activities or things like parades or concerts usually scheduled during the holiday week? I looked at some of the calendars on a few sites but I did not notice anything special.

Thanks

The walk to the beach has a sidewalk. You go by Coligny plaza where there are lots of interesting stores, a few restaurants, grocery store, etc. Goggle The Island Packet and you will find info on activities closer to your trip. There normally isn't a parade or big celebration. I can't remember if there is a performance at the Arts Center while you are here. We are members but I don't have my schedule in front of me. Their productions are very good. The Jazz Corner also has good entertainment if you like jazz. E-mail me if you have other questions about the area as we are in Sun City Hilton Head that you pass between I-95 and the island.

There seemed to be some traffic coming onto the island that Saturday check-in and I noticed more people on the beach on that Monday. But as far as being crowded, I didn't notice it being any more crowded than when I have been there a couple of weeks earlier in May. It was very pleasant crowd-wise and weather-wise.

We have stayed in the Forest Beach area many times and stayed at Waterside by Spinnaker one of those times. The walk to the beach is a secondary road with little traffic. The traffic might pick up a bit when you get to the Coligny Shopping area, but there are sidewalks. It is a very pleasant walk. We love to ride our bikes while on HHI. We usually ride our bikes to the beach. Everybody has a basket and we only take what we can carry in the baskets. Yes, it's very safe to walk to the beach and Coligny day or evening.

Waterside is a very nice resort. Very clean and well-maintained. The Forest Beach area is one of my favorite areas to stay in HH.

Enjoy! To me, the weather is just about perfect in May.

Will be at Barony the same week and have been end of May many times. I do not recall it being really hectic anywhere. I do not recall any special celebrations either.

Have not stayed at Waterside but it's near everything and we biked thru the property 09/2008. Looked pretty well taken care of.

W.Bob,

As others have said, the walk to the beach from Waterside is safe. The back entrance to Waterside puts you on Avocet Street. Follow Avocet (has a sidewalk if you prefer) about 2 short blocks to the beach (you'll cross North Forest Beach Drive which shouldn't have much, if any traffic at that location).

If you want, go to www.maps.google.com and type in
"Pope Ave & Lagoon Rd, Hilton Head Island, SC"
On the resulting map, follow Lagoon Road 1 block to the intersection of Lagoon & Avocet Street. The unmarked portion of Avocet St. after it crosses Lagoon Road is the back entrance to Waterside. The back road takes you past Waterside's tennis courts too.

Have a great trip.

Richard

Thanks for everyone's help. We are looking forward to our trip & are a little concerned. I read one post from someone who stated that that week was a madhouse on the Island. Crowds really do not bother us but if traffic was really bad or you could not get reservations for dinner etc. then we would be more concerned.

Thanks again

Schools aren't out yet

Since schools in the area aren't out yet for elementary school through high school (colleges are mostly out) - it isn't nearly as busy as a week or two later.

We noticed that the weekend was busier but the rest of the week was pretty relaxed again. We LOVE this time of year!

W.Bob,

No need to worry. You're within walking distance to Coligny Plaza - you pass it on the way to the beach - Avocet is the rear entrance. Coligny Plaza has several restaurants. There are also some restaurants on Lagoon Road. Pope Ave in that area has several too.

So, if you choose, you don't even need to drive.

I'm sure you'll have a great time.
