Puerto Vallarta, Christmas 09' - Airfare help???

We have Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta booked for 12/19-12/26/09. We will be flying from Detroit Metro and my brother and family will be flying from Omaha. We are trying to determine the best time to get our airfare without getting stuck with 20 hour flights but also without risking losing our money if the airline goes bankrupt in the current economical situation. US Air appears to have a good option for us to meet with my brother on a connection in Phoenix, but I am wondering -
Should we wait to book until mid-summer? What are the chances of missing out on the shorter flight durations? Do you think the prices will go down between now and then, or just up? We are already looking at $1000 per ticket....$6000 is a lot to risk losing if the airline goes under before then.
Any tips?

Since you are flying out of Detroit why don't you fly charter?

The cheapest I found using sidestep.com was Delta for $845 from detroit
Aeromexico out of o'hare has a flight for those dates for $512--if you have 6 people traveling it would be worth the 4hr drive to save $3000.
