JUst a suggestion...
check roundtrip fares when only needing one-way. I just did and the roundtrip is $87 and the one-way is $135. Go figure. I think I'll buy a roundtrip and not take the ride back.

Seems like a plan. But where can one go for $87/RT?
Is free use of the restroom included in the $87? ![]()

Although the risk may be low, keep in mind that buying a r/t with the intention of only using o/w is most likely a violation of the terms and conditions of the ticket. The airlines could try to come back at you for the full fare you should have paid. Only you can determine if the risk is worth it, but I'd be surprised if many people here has actually heard of someone getting in trouble for doing what you're thinking.

Usually airlines will only notice if you do this often and create a pattern. Some airlines, such as Delta, police this more than others. Their own corporate SS is called the Revenue Protection Unit.
Most airlines in the US do charge more for a one way ticket than for a R/T, so throwing away the return usually works to reduce the fare if you are only going one way. Another trick that sometimes works is back to back ticketing. In the days of Eastern Airlines, I did this regularly on trips to the Bahamas to save money. For years, it was $50 or more cheaper to buy two R/T tickets RDU to Miami and then Miami to Nassau than it was to buy a ticket all the way through R/T RDU to Nassau. You flew the same planes on the same routing and times and could check luggage all the way through, but saved money. Unlike the throwaway returns, back to back ticketing complies with most fare rules. This rarely works on TATL tickets, but I have occaisionally found it to work other places in the Caribbean.
