Will Delta allow this?
I am flying to the Caribbean in a couple of weeks using FF miles. The reservation has been made for months. On my return home on 3/28 I change planes in Atlanta on the way to IND. Our son lives in Atlanta and just found out about a function I would like to attend with him on 3/29. Would they allow me to stay over and catch another flight to IND a day or so later w/o a penalty? Thanks.
Carolyn

I know that one stopover is allowed free on a TATL (trans-Atlantic) award ticket. It has been a while since I used DL miles on a Caribbean ticket, but I seem to think that it is allowed there, too.
The other issue with DL is its change fee, which is the highest in the industry, at least for the US. Even if the stopover is allowable, you will be charged a change fee, and the number of days prior to flight will be part of the equation in determing the amount.

Delta
Delta is outrageous on almost everything. It is possible to do what you suggest. Since it is a ff ticket, you MIGHT be able to do so without a change fee. If this were United or American, you could make a ff ticket change with no fee if it is the same itinerary. My suggestion is to call and find out. If you don't like the answer, call again and maybe a third time, until you get the answer you want.

Echoing Jimster and adding some thoughts... if you need to call several times, do so at varying times of the day to reach agents on different shifts. If possible, call closer to the beginning of a shift before the agents are fried and remember that old adage of more flies being caught w/ honey.....

CALLED AN OPEN JAW
Can be done domestically but there is a fee for ANY change made to a Delta ticket. |

open jaw
Delta may charge for any change-although as I said United and American would allow this since it is a ff ticket if it were an international destination. I need to correct myself on this point. This is not an open jaw, however. With an open jaw, you go to one destination and leave from another. This is merely a stop over. I don't believe Delta allows a stop over domestically and United only allows one if you are flying to Hawaii.
