A co-worker told me that he plays with the pick-up times when he's booking a car on carrentals.com. He says that the time you pick it up has an influence on the price!

I checked it out today for a trip we're taking in the fall. For the car we're looking for, an economy level, the price varied by $20 for the week. It was highest if we wanted to pick it up in the afternoon and lowest in the morning. I didn't check out other car categories, but my co-worker said he has saved a lot more than that.

FWIW, I also checked this out with priceline.com and hotwire.com and I did not see this effect.

I've heard that a pick up on the half hour can also increase the rate, I think it is all YMMV.
