I have Wicked thoughts

Is this a show for young kids? Like Lion King?

I know the Wizard of Oz story but I know nothing about Wicked other than it's not available yet at TDF for half price. Not much for me to go on in terms of taking young kids. As you can see, I really need your help!

IMHO it is not for young ones under 8. Having a history with the Wizard of Oz is what makes it enjoyable because it is a backstory with irony about the Good Witch and Bad Witch based on the book Wicked. I enjoyed the LK and Beauty and the Beast plays. I saw Wicked last year and it is terrific. I will never think the same way about the WOZ. Whole new insight to the witches.

My kids loved WICKED and saw it 3 times. At the time they were 11 & 14. Their friends also loved it.

We actually take the entire fifth grade at my school to see Wicked each year. For most it is their first Broadway experience, and they are completely dazzled by it.

The musical is not based on the Wizard of Oz movie - it is based on the novel Wicked, which is a really bizarre adult novel - however, they have toned it down a lot for the musical. I think it's too dark for kids under 10.

Wicked the musical -

My brother and his wife have seen Wicked twice in San Francisco.
About two weeks ago, I just asked him if he thought the show would be enjoyable for my 5 1/2 yr old. He and his wife think their 10 1/2 yr old, 4th grade son is barely old enough to see it now. They said there are some dark, loud, scary scenes.

I knew it was the back story but that was all I knew.

I think we'll wait a few years more. Most of the kids will be over 10 by then.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I agree with that, though our 8 year old- youngest of three so used to older kid things- enjoyed it.

One thing I think is important that we overlooked: most kids have not seen "The Wizard of Oz" these days. Rent the DVD and watch it with them prior to seeing Wicked to make it more meaningful. We did it after the fact but wish we'd thought of that before.

Just saw Wicked for a second time- first was in NYC and this time in SF. Great show!

Took our girls last summer in NYC. We LOVED it! They were 15, 12 & 8 at the time. The 8 year is usually figity but sat mesmerized the whole time.

We have seen it three times. Even though we have no children I would not recommend it for younger children. While it is based on the novel, it very loosely ties to it. There are far more references in the play to the Wizard of Oz than there were in the book. It truly is a great show and I would go see it again.

I keep telling my wife though that the story of Wicked couldn't have happened, because OZ only existed in Dorothy’s dream, it started with her getting knocked out and ceased to exist with her waking up. My wife doesn't buy my story.

Obviously you never read the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The movie "The Wizard of Oz" was quite different. In the books, it is a real place. Your wife is correct.

Talking Saw it with Children in London

I have a 6,5,4 year old and all just saw it in London over the Christmas Break. My 4 year old can be scared of her own shadow but thought the show was wonderful. They are still singing the soundtrack and would like to see it again. It depends on your children. My children didn't seem to think it was dark or scary but they have seen wizard of oz a million times.

I would let them see it again.

I know she is. I just like to give her a hard time about it.

The movie is far more happyfied (if that is even a word) than the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire.

I loved the Oz books as a child, and even though I liked the movie version, the books are so much better. I also ready "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire and found it very dark and somewhat strange. The musical stage production was much different.

Not to completely hijack this thread, but was anybody else terrified by the Wicked Witch in the movie version as a child? I remember having nightmares for weeks and sleeping on the floor in my parents' room. I was probably about four or five at the time.

I guess my vote would be not to take younger children.
