Hawaii air fare

Can't believe how high the late June airfares from LAX to HNL. They are running $700-800. Can't believe this. I wonder if they might come down? Any ideas

I'm here in the midwest and been watching the fares to get an idea for next summer.

A few weeks ago fares dropped from Detroit to HNL to about $669 on NWA for mid July. They stayed their for a couple of weeks, now they are back up into the $700-800+ range.

I get emails every day from the various travel sites about deals. I'm sure another HI one will come up.

In this economy those prices do seem kind of high, but that's the norm for high season from mid-June to mid-August.

While I was in Hawaii two weeks ago, there was a local news story on one of the TV stations in Honolulu. Apparently, the major airlines have reduced service to the Islands as a result of falling tourism. This has effectively reduced supply, thereby allowing the airlines to keep fares relatively high.

During the news story, the TV anchor interviewed a prominent travel agent based in Hawaii and asked if she anticipated any deals to promote summer travel. The travel agent's response was "to be honest with you, I suspect travelers ought to be booking now...oil prices are at very low levels and--since such a high percentage of the airlines' cost structure is for fuel costs--I would anticipate airfares to Hawaii to go up this summer, not down".

A couple of weeks ago, airfare from the east coast to Hawaii was about $500 roundtrip.

Currently, airfare to Maui from Denver is $526 on United for various April dates. Not bad.

I paid $562 from Denver to Lihue for our April trip on USAirways. I didn't have the courage to wait until the very last minute. I think the fares will be much cheaper when our take-off date gets closer.

We booked our early August LAX / HNL flights a few weeks ago. Much earlier than normal. $335 Delta. Which is in the range we have paid on our three trips over the last five years during July and August.

My BIL dragged his feet and was looking at a minimum of $450 last night. As mentioned earlier, you must check daily and be ready to book immediately. I use kayak and sidestep to get an idea. Then I go directly to the airline websites.

Good luck.
