Talking Finally found a good car rental price for Phoenix

I was very discouraged by the outrageous prices for renting a car in Phoenix for our upcoming trip to Sedona the end of May.

I finally found this deal on Dollar's website by clicking on city deals after putting in my travel info. I got a total price of $285.65 for 9 days from 5/21 to 5/30 for a mid-size. Would have been better without all those fees! Total base rate was 155.85, the fees alone were 129.80. Still a good deal compared to everything else I looked at. I'm happy!

Let's hope this is a sign that they've seen the light and charging outragous prices. At the rates I've been seeing, I'll figure out how to live without a rental car.

The problem I have is I can usually only find those rates AT THE AIRPORT. The same car off airport often runs $25 a day so, what I save in fees I lose in base rate! Isn't that fee rate outrageous? I wonder if that is before or after the new increases!!!??

I was amazed at how high the taxes and fees were on my last Phoenix rental, too. They almost doubled the rate!

The good news is that they do have a very efficient system worked out where all rental car agencies are housed in the same off-site parking garage. This makes the process much more gas and time efficient because all renters use the same generic fleet of vans. No more watching twenty "Budget" vans pass by when all you want is "Alamo." And since the passengers are dispersing to different agencies, there's no need to race out and try to beat everyone else on the van to the queue.

Net effect is that the rental rates are lower but the fees are higher to support the common infrastructure. And, of course, the good politicians of Arizona can not miss an opportunity to cash in on tourism.

We rented at an off-site Budget location at a hotel in Scottsdale and were able to return it to the airport for a whole lot less than the airport rental desk. At the time we had DS living there to shuttle us otherwise the cab ride would make a big hole in the savings. I just asked DW the particulars, but she doesn't remember off the top of her head.

I couldn't find a good car price for an october trip to florida. I gave priceline a shot and got it for 1/2 what I was quoted as "best" price from the same company. I doubt I would use them for air but for cars and hotels it seems ok.

What I do is to start looking for car rentals as soon as I know the details of my trip. I reserve the lowest price car that meets my needs, but I keep looking. If a better deal comes along, I grab it and cancel the previous reservation. Years ago I used to do this by phone but the internet makes this process sooo much easier.

The fees at the Phoenix airport are shocking, but car rental prices in general are incredibly high.
