Need a Netbook for travel

I am in the market for a Netbook for travel, can anyone give any recomendations? I am leaning towards the Asus 1000HE, but I know HP and Dell make one.

I want one with a hard drive, I need to be able to load Office.

questions:
1. Any recomendaitons?
2. Is there a way to load softward from a Cd/Dvd without buying the external drive?
3. If I want to copy a bunch of DVD's to the hard drive to have on a long trip, how is that done? What software do folks use for that?
4. Any other comments or suggestions?

Thanks
Ginny

Well, I did a search and did find some old threads. I still have at least one question, could I network the netbook to my home network and use a CD/DVD on the desktop to load software onto the netbook?
Thanks

I have used my desktop to load programs on my laptop. You select properties under the drive you want to use on the desktop, in most computers D or. E, then allow sharing. It is similar to sharing a folder or file. However, depending on your firewall settings or protection settings it may not allow you to share even if you want it to. It becomes a bigger headace than buying a cheap universal external DVD drive.

I have the 1000H and have really enjoyed it for travel. The mouse is super sensitive, which made it really tricky to type, but I found a way to adjust it on the Asus site. Other than that, I have absolutely no complaints.

Sorry, but I can't answer any of the other questions.

A friend of mine bought the Dell and had nothing but bad luck with it. She wanted to return it, but Dell has so far refused to take it back.

Another friend owns an Acer, and has been very happy.

I have a friend who recommended the Acer as well. The main thing to look for he says is the battery! You want a 6 cell minimum. Hope this helps.

I can agree with that. I have a HP with a 3 cell battery. Fortunately, I rarely need to rely on using just the battery as we take it on vacation for internet surfing and to work with photographs.

Rather than buy one with a hard drive, we bought one with an SSD drive and then purchased a 250 GB external hard drive. Since I need to share files between computers, this arrangement has worked out well for me. The external hard drive fits easily into the pocket of my jacket for travel.

Cool

My husband bought an ASUS EEE PC 1000HA 160GB 10" XP BLACK 6CEL - ASEEEPC1000B and I have claimed it as mine. LOL

I love it! I put all the applications I needed on a flash drive and loaded them that way. I took it to Cabo San Lucas when we went and really used it. Up until a few months ago, I didn't even consider getting a notebook computer to take on our vacations.

lean no further. that's a very good choice right now, and the one I would buy if I were buying today.

To answer your questions 2 & 3, I just bought a usb-powered external dvd writer for less than $100 to use with my Lenovo S10 netbook. I don't travel with it, I just leave the external usb optical drive at home. Mine's an LG, but there are others. Try to get one that's usb-powered.

So, now I need a power adapter

Well, thanks for all the info.

So, I will get the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, what about an adapter for the plane and car? Anyone got any experience with that? I checked IGO, but they do not show an adapter.

Thanks
Ginny

Good question. My existing igo adapter had a tip that already worked with the Lenovo S10 so I was lucky with that, and lucky that I found all the tips that came with it.

Try notebookreview.com forums maybe?

On the other hand, the 6-cell battery in that thing lasts for a really long time, so maybe you don't need a travel adapter?

You might find it for less if you do a search

I wonder why this thread hasn't been moved to the lounge.

Got an Acer Aspire One a few months ago and love it. I use a simple DVD/CD drive I got off eBay for about $20 and use it to load software. Swapping files via my wireless network works OK but since the desktop is a Vista $%^&* and the Acer is XP, there are some quirks that annoy me so I usually email attachments or use a thumb drive for transfer.

Cheers
