Has anyone heard of timeshare brokers in Florida? they call from Orlando and Opa Locke and tell me they have a buyer for my timeshare

Welcome to TUG! :hi:

I am not familiar with that particular company, but typically, the next step is that they will ask for a large upfront payment to list your timeshare. After you make the payment, the "seller will back out" and that's the last you will hear from any of them.

With the economy the way it is, people are dumping nice timeshares on ebay for $1, because they can't afford to travel and they can't afford the maintenance fee. If this company has a buyer willing to pay thousands for your timeshare - be VERY suspicious. Right now on the resale market, the top dogs like Starwood, Hilton, and Hyatt are selling for 50% or less of retail, the mid-level resorts for 10-20% of retail, and the bottom resorts aren’t selling at all.

Here on TUG, we don't recommend paying a big upfront fee to a reseller, because once they have your money, they have no motivation to actually SELL your timeshare - why bother? They already have your money!

If you have to sell your TS, here are some links that might be helpful, but if you can hold on until the economy improves, or if we can help you learn how to get more out of your TS, you might be better off.

In addition to the free TUG Marketplace (linked in the red bar at the top of the page) I personally use these cheap or free websites to post my Ads:

www.craigslist.org (free)

www.redweek.com
* Membership $14.99 for 12 Months
* Timeshare Rental Postings - $19.99/ea for 6 Months - $49.99/ea for 12 Months

www.myresortnetwork.com
$19.95 posting fee ($24.95 for a float week ad)

BTW - we have a no-advertising rule on TUG, so you will not be able to post the specific details of your ownership here. If someone asks, you can click on their blue user name and send them a private message, if you want to.

Good luck!

Never heard of'm -- BUT if they tell you that you have to pony up some substantial amount of money BEFORE the sale to the buyer they claim they already have for your timeshare, then they're a company that makes its money by absorbing money up-front from suckers rather than by actually, you know, selling timeshares.

Click here for a (hypothetical) illustration of how that kind of hornswoggle fits into the multiple layers of overlapping timeshare scam out there that are waiting to catch us up if we're not wary.

You are probably referring to Timeshare Broker Services

You are probably referring to Timeshare Broker Services, the brokerage affiliated with SMTN. Many of their agents work from home, so their calls can come from a number of locations.

If they have a buyer, I'd recommend you have them send you the contract. It should detail the full terms of the sale, including the commission you will be required to pay at closing and any other add on fees or transaction fees that will be applied, as well as a listing agreement. Be sure to read all the terms fully, and understand that you can decline the listing but still accept the contract if you don't want to be obligated to them if the buyer later cancels. You would have to return the listing to them and write in "declined listing" or "refused to sign" on the signature line. They will probably need to have a copy of the declined form in their file to prove it was sent to you if the transaction is later audited by the state.

At this point, as a seller you should investigate every opportunity you get to secure a buyer!

Good luck....
