Las Vegas & Grand Canyon

Hi, new to Tugs so looking for advice. Thinking of visiting Grand Canynon early September 09. We will be flying from Manchester UK and hope to spend about 10 days on hol.
Not into the casino gambling thing in Las Vegas, but it will be nice to experience it all, but really do want to see Grand Canyon. We are more of a beach type couple,so I guess if the hotel has a pool and loungers that would be good also. We also really enjoy walking.

Do we use RCi points for hotel in Vegas, and also try and get a couple of days stay using our points near The Canyon. If so reccomends would be good.

Our problem is we dont really want to drive in the States. So suggestions on how to get from Vegas to Canynon and back to Vegas.
Another thought, if we stay near GC in timeshare is there usually a store for the odd provision close by-dont forget were not hiring a car.

Resorts: Starwood-WKORV, SDO, & SVR, Branson-Roark Vacation Club, Tahoe-Kingsbury Crossing, Kauai Beach Villas - 2 weeks
There are Grand Canyon Tours from Las Vegas, but it's 5 hours one way to the closest part of the GC, so it's an ordeal to do it in one day. I would do an overnight trip if it were me.

Lightbulb Stay at the Best Western, right outside the park entrance!

We stayed at the Best Wester, "Moments away from the South Rim entrance to Grand Canyon National Park", and loved it. I highly recommend this place. Get there before sunset, so that you can witness at least one sunset and sunrise at GC. (Sometimes it would be overcast, so make sure to give yourself two chances!)

Just did that trip

There are a lot of Timeshares in Las Vegas and a couple of days there would probably be wise. I took my niece and her family there last winter and we stated in Sedona, about an hour and a half south of the Grand Canyon. That area is beautiful and it is easy access to the Grand Canyon. Sedona itself is absolutely beautiful. So you can go see the red rock canyons, The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam (between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon & Sedona) all in one trip.

Also, if you are driving that way, you might wish to consider going to Grand Canyon West, where there is a Skywalk (glass walkway) over the Canyon. It is a 51 mile detour off the highway, but a most unusual experience that many never get to see.

There are also timeshares in Flagstaff which is a little closer to the Grand Canyon if you can not find a location in Sedona.

Let us know what you decide. Have a great flight over from the UK.

Smile Grand Canyon Tours

We were in Vegas a few years ago and visited the Grand Canyon. We flew from Vegas in a small place over the Hoover Dam and then took a helicoptor tour over the canyon and stopped in the canyon and took a tour on the river by boat. It was expensive but it was a great way to see so much in one day. I'm sure you can find many tour companys in the Las Vegas area that offer similar tours. They are probably cheaper now too. Have a great time on your "holiday" here in the states.

Skip Vegas!

If you are not too keen about Vegas, skip it, and stay at Flagstaff. If Flagstaff is not available then you can try Sedona.

We stayed at Wyndham Flagstaff and toured all the surrounding area on day trips:

Las Vegas & Grand Canyon

Thank you to all those who took the time to post advice.
I have since spoken with RCI there are a couple of places available for early Sept one is Hilton Grand Vacation.
As I was originally thinking of a 10 day stay I've been informed I would have to book the 2 weeks using obviously double the amount of points.
As its a very long flight from the UK wondering if it worth doing it for a week instead. Once again thanks to all for links posted ect.
The sun is actually shining here in North Wales.

Resorts: FF/Wyndham Flagstaff, FF/ Wyndham Williamsburg - Kingsgate, FF/Wyndham Myrtle Beach/Westwinds, Lifetime in Hawaii (Oahu)
We're at Wyndham Flagstaff right now and did a two day (overnight) to the Grand Canyon earlier in the week. In my opinion, that is the way to do the park and do it justice. Several years ago we did the north rim of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas (driving) . . . and frankly it was a day of hell. Long drive, husband cranky about "When are we going to get there??" . . . and we went ill prepared with no snacks/food and there was NOTHING at the north rim (off season) and we had a long drive back to civilization (Utah!) for dinner at like 8:30pm.

Vegas is nothing special if you don't like the casinos and/or shows.

You can also do day trips from there to the Petrified National Park, Montezuma's Castle (also in the US Park Service system) and Sunset Crater National Monument (which is adjacent to Wupatki NM).

We have been in Vegas many times, there is a LOT to do besides gambling. There are of course shows but also enough free things to keep you busy for a week for example looking at the "over the top buildings", Bellagio fountains, TI pirate show, Springs Nature preserve, red rock canyon, valley of fire, Summerlin fairs, etc etc. Don't miss Boulder Station Casino Canyon for a great $6.00 buffet. Recommend seeing the NORTH rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce National Park. The south rim of the Grand Canyon is great, but the north rim & Bryce are MUCH more jaw dropping. If you can get reservations in the National Parks Lodges it's the best way to go. NPS.gov is the website to start with. Hoover dam is a must see, make sure to take the tour that goes INSIDE the dam, recommend a "bus tour" from Vegas rather then driving yourself.
Hope you enjoy,
