Space bags for traveling
Has anyone used the "space bags" when traveling? I think about it sometimes and never do. Any pointers? Thanks.

The travel ones don't work as good as the original ones IMHO. I've used that type once and didn't think it was worth it.
If you are flying and checking a bag, I know people that have used them and the bag is way overweight. Then you have to hope you have access to a vaccum with a hose where you are going. |

I used the travel ones for a cruise and didn't think they saved much space. You roll them, and then the air comes back. Mom liked them because they kept her stuff separate, but I probably won't bother again.

I tried the type where you roll the bag to force out the air. I found that, at best, I could get one, maybe two, more shirts in the suitcase. The "space bag" didn't seem to have any effect on bulky items such as sweaters.
I found if I roll-up my clothes I can get the extra articles of clothing in my suitcase anyway. |

I've used this kind; Amazon sells two for $13. The picture shows step 1; for step 2 you do a belly flop across the bag and the air whooshes out.
Of course it's like a trash compactor that turns 50 pounds of garbage into 50 pounds of garbage. But I find it useful to use a smaller suitcase when flying, and with a few of these my 25" checked bag and 21" carry-on come very near the weight limits. And they're handy for accumulating dirty laundry during the trip. ![]() Last edited by rklein001 : March 25, 2009 at 05:04 PM. |

I normally take one with me and bring my dirty clothes home in it. I use the "belly flop" method of expelling the air

Wouldn't a plastic rubbish bag do just the same job? Sit or lay on it to expel the air and then tie the end with string. How many rubbish bags would you have to use to match the cost of a 'Space Bag'?

I have used them on long trips for items which I know I will only wear a few times, ie: dressy cloths (lol). I stick them in a bag at the bottom of my suit case, such the air and and it will take up a minimal amount of space.
When on road trips, when moving from hotel to hotel, what I really love are "packing cubes". I will put shirts in one, pants in another, etc and it makes finding items in a suit case so much easier. It was funny, when my daughter went on a European trip with her school everyone was so impressed (even the teachers) and she really appreciated the ease of packing and un-. ![]() |

Don't the clothes get really crushed and wrinkled in those bags?

We use the space bags for our quilts and feather pillows - which come on every trip. We find that they take up less space in the bags. You do have to watch weight though if flying.
My DH uses both the vacuum method and the belly flop ![]() |

great idea! One thing that I really miss on vacation is my bedding. We use duvet cover at home. It is hard for me to get use to flat sheet and blanket. Most of the time, the blankets are so sorry looking too.

I get cold at night and need more than a sheet. The bedspreads (and I would guess the blankets as well) at most places are washed close to never and I just can't bring myself to use them. And pillows are such an individual thing... it's taken me alot of time to get mine just right And getting a good nights sleep is vital with all the activities we do so I am willing to schlep what I have to. |

I'm another packing cube lover!! I don't think I can pack without them any more - I LOVE them! They make it so easy to pack and unpack - and I use different colored ones to quickly separate and find what I need. When I'm packing (as I'm doing right now) I first pack everything into cubes (tops in one, shorts in another, undergarments in another, workout clothes in another, etc...) then all I need to do is fit all the cubes in the suitcase and rearrange them as needed. They are wonderful. I have tried plastic bags (rolling them to get the air out) but I prefer the cubes - I think the cubes are lighter and conform to the available space better.

I'm another fan of the packing cubes. We each have different colors, and they are helpful.
As far as the space bags, I give up. I've tried their laughable directions, and gotten pretty good at the belly flop, but then I look up, and there's a piece of fabric stuck in the slide. I've found I do myself more harm in the process. I think a zip-lock bag would do as well. Maybe I'm just not proficient enough, but after years of sailing, I think rolling my clothes accomplishes the same thing. Maybe there's a class, or a college course on belly flopping? |
