Options for left over points?

I recently closed on a resale 5000 point package at the Hilton Club New York and was wondering what my options are to do with this years points if I can't take any more vacations. Left over 2008 points were used for my 2009 reservation, so I have my full allotment of 2009 points left.

What I am thinking of doing is converting my 2010 points to HHonors points and then using my 2009 points for my 2010 reservation. Any pros or cons to this idea or any other ideas.

A question- if I call now to make a 2010 reservatin and have 2009 and 2010 points in my account will they use 2009 or 2010 points for my reservation.

Thanks

To use your 2009 points for a 2010 reservation, you will need to "rescue" your 2009 points for a small fee. Otherwise, they expire on 12/31. "Rescued" points may only be used for a club-reservation.

Rather than converting your 2010 points to HH points, consider "depositing" them for use in 2011. "Deposited" points can be borrowed back into 2010, if you find somewhere else to go. IMHO, the HH conversion is inefficient and a last resort (figuratively) as you usually end up with fewer days.

What you can do is deposit them with RCI and that gives you 2 years to use them. You could see if any family wants to use them and pay the maint fee. I did that for my brother and he loved his trip to cancun, saved him some big money and paid the fee's so it was a win win.

Not sure how this work?

If you make a reservation for 2010, but you make it in 2009 (for example november 2009 reservation for an April 2010 trip), can you use your 2009 points or do you have to rescue them into 2010 first?

You would need to rescue the 2009 points before you make the reservation. Otherwise, 2010 points will be used. Once the 2009 points are rescued, the system will automatically use those points first for Club Reservations.

It's Better to Borrow!

I saw a post on one of the boards here that really made a lot of sense to me. Brilliant! IMHO, if it's complimentary to borrow, and $69 to bank, borrowing from next year's allotment makes sense (i.e., use 2011 points for a 2010 reservation, etc.). If you are 1 year "ahead" you never have to pay the fee to bank! The worst that could happen is you travel same year. Also, then you are never stuck converting to Hhonors (which is not the best value unless you are doing a global award).

Granted, this might not be the best if you wanted to double up points (use current year and borrow from next year) if your next year points were always "borrowed." But for me, where I have 3,400 points 1 year and 6,800 the next, I think it will work quite nicely.

Borrow if you can and ONLY rescue or deposit if you need to. I usually borrow. But 2008 I had a big change in travel plans and decided to rescue and deposit just to keep my options open. If I get to the point where I have used all my points up I will go back to borrow mode.

It is nice to have options if you find you don't/can't use your points.
