Sedona Road Construction?

We are leaving for Sedona on Saturday and got a letter today from Sedona Springs urging us to avoid driving in on SR179 because of road construction.
I think we will take their advice travel via Cottonwood....but how bad is the traffic due to this road construction?

I would advise you to disregard the letter. Enter Sedona via SR 179 from I-17. It is second only to arriving via Oak Creek Canyon (from the north). The construction is on SR 179from Chapel Road north to the bridge at Oak Creek, a distance of less than 3 miles. The delays are minimal. Traffic slows from 35-45 down to 20-25 MPH. But most people are slowing down for the scenery more than the construction. If after you drive it once, you choose not to drive it again, that's your choice. I drive it several times each week. It's no problem. And the drama of the views when you first see Sedona, long before you reach the construction, will be well worth it!

This should not be missed for first time vistors to sedona so don't let the construction scare you from missing it.
The minor slow down due to construction allows you to enjoy the view even more. I entered sedona that way a year or so ago when construction was really heavy at the time and it was no big deal. I have been in far worse
construction delays on the freeway in Tucson and Phoenix.

If you are arriving after dark, I would advise going to Sedona via Cottonwood. But be sure to make the drive on 179 at some point in your visit - the scenery is spectacular!

Locals are in a better position to give you advice over someone who spent a weekend there . . . but with that being said, I will confirm that the road construction was a minor, VERY minor, inconvenience three weekends ago!

As I recall the construction was from the top of Hillside to the circle (old Y) which is, as they said, only about 3 miles. Even under the best of conditions on the old road the driver needed to keep their eyes on the road and, since you are descending the hill, I think you should not worry about the construction delay or any loss of view. That being said, since we go there frequently, we prefer the Cottonwood route (especially since Sedona Springs is on the southern end of town) unless I have permission to gamble first!
