Time to rent the car for Maui! In other places usually get Full Size since that's what the DH wants. That's something like an Impala (4 door sedan). Is that too big for Maui's roads? We'll be doing some of the day drives and maybe going to Hana.

The travelers are the ones in my avatar! DH, me, DS9 and DD12, with only carryon roller bags and school backpacks as luggage.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I think full size or below will be fine, but I would recommend midsize. The roads are somewhat small, parking in Lahaina is sometimes difficult to find and the smaller the car the easier for parking.

You asked - I am going to give it to you - Hawaii costs a ton. You spend all that $$ do NOT go cheap here. If you are doing the road to Hana - pay the extra and get a convertibile. I promise you it makes the journey 100x better and it will be worth every penny!

We did the convertible before kids and it was great. If there are just two people then I woudl recommend it. With the 2 small kids, we now get a luxury car or an SUV and we have no problems with parking or even the smaller bridges on the road to Hana.

I've never said this before but in Maui "size doesn't matter"

We usually rent a midsize SUV. I get motion sick and not feeling confined is crucial to my comfort. It was also necessary to transport luggage for 4 people, especially since I tend to overpack (I swear, next time I won't!!).

Parking is tight in Maui, especially Lahaina, but we had no difficulties. Most of the time we used the most awesome Starwood shuttle. :)

We went with the mid-size SUV and were happy with the Ford Escape Avis gave us - not too big but still plenty of room. One thing I found strange about Maui was how long it took to get out of the rental car lot because they check every dent and ding you mark on the sheet going out. People must be very tough on cars on Maui.

The only problem with a convertible is that some of them have almost no trunk space and you may not even be able to get 4 carry-ons in the trunk - the Mustang's trunk is tiny - the Dodge Sebring has a lot more trunk space and I think it's a bigger car inside too.

A Jeep is also a lot of fun, but has almost no luggage storage.

A few pages back on the Hawaii Board there is a coupon code to get a Jeep or Convertible for $199 a week.

Thanks for all the info! Off to Priceline and its competition!

(LisaRex, want my packing list? It works for me and the kids, but the DH is on his own and seems to bring twice as many clothes as we do! Shoes are another matter, however...:) And then the tennis stuff....)

Thanks so much. I have a nice packing list. I don't stick to it. I'm weak....

And like you, my husband is the biggest culprit of all. He packs his running shoes, his tennis shoes, his hiking shoes, his water shoes, his dressy casual shoes, his flip flops, his sandals AND his flippers.

WOW that is alot of shoes but at least he is never wishing he had brought a certain pair! I generally wear my flip flops on the plane. When I get to the room I take them off and rarely put them back on except to go into town. I do bring my flippers as I love the snorkeling in Hawaii.

P.S. I do also golf barefoot just about everyday so I am just not the shoes kind of guy.

We just take carry-ons, so I wear a old pair of tennis shoes on the plane, to save room. Then before we go home, I throw them away - we like to hike so they are usually covered with red dirt anyway, so that's why I take my oldest pair and then just throw them away. Besides that I take 2 pairs of Birkenstocks - one for walking and a rubber pair for the beach and pool. Flip flops hurt my feet.

I see lots of people doing the same on flights. I occasionally wear sandals, but inevitably start to think of what problems might occur in an emergency. When I think of it ahead of time, I typically wear sneakers (good traction and comfortable, with protection). It might be the last thing on your mind when you prepare for a trip, but it's always good to consider the options.

We wear our tennis shoes, as I and DH usually work out while on vacation or he makes me and the boys go hiking. They take up to much room in the bag(we do carry-on's like Denise, even with 2 boys 8 & 12).

Good point Ken, one that I forgot about. Back when I travelled a lot when I was working I always put my tennies on even if I was in a suit because they would be better than pumps in an emergency(read that in one of those women's business mags) and with my flat feet more support to walk in the airport.

Ha...because my feet are size 12 my wife limits me to one pair plus flip flops. Funny she always packs an empty bag and comes back with more stuff than we left with.

The DH packs his own stuff. I am not responsible for the number of shoes, shirts, or whatever he brings, nor am I responsible for him forgetting his bathing suit or workout shorts. It wasn't in the contract when we got married. :)
