If my use year is 2010, is October 1, 2009 the earliest I can convert half of my Westin two bedroom unit to Starpoints? Have not done this conversion for many years. I looked in the FAQs but didn't find this information.

Taken from https://www.mystarcentral.com/reference/userguide/starpoints/sp_ex2.html

You may convert your ownership week to Starpoints during the SPG Conversion Window and receive your Starpoints within approximately 72 hours of the transaction. The SPG Conversion Window extends from: October 1 (prior to the Use Year being converted) through March 31 (of the actual Use Year being converted). If you request to convert your week prior to the SPG Conversion Window, your Starpoints will not be credited to your Starwood Preferred Guest account until October 1.

I think this answers your question.

maui-ed: Thank you -- I ended up calling Starwood and found exactly what you said. One more thing though -- we would have to come up with almost $800 HOA fees right then (October 1) before they would proceed -- plus the fee for doing it. We are going to proceed with converting to SPG points, but waiting until 10/1.

Yes - and it makes sense if you think about. If you get your points on Oct. 1 - you are essentially borrowing them from 2010, and you can "spend" them immediately, so Starwood wants their $$$ before you get your points.

It's pretty much the same concept as borrowing your Staroptions from the next year - you can do it, but you have to pay the MF in advance.

*I added the additional conversion info. to the FAQ. - Thanks!

You are welcome Cathyb. Interesting that the guide from Starwood did not contain the information regarding the need to pay the MFs. I agree with Denise - it makes sense, since you are in effect getting the right to use the points prior to the use year.

The guide from Starwood, (our FAQ) is actually not from Starwood. It was a collaborative effort by TUG members. Starwood does not participate on TUG in any way.

Denise, I was actually refering to the guide at this URL, https://www.mystarcentral.com/refere...ts/sp_ex2.html, which is where I obtained the original information that I provided for Cathyb.

I read a little more from that guide and it does go on to state, "Owners must be current in their financial obligations for the Use Year being converted." Which is another way of saying that you must have paid your MFs for the use year.

Ohhh...OK!

Do staroptions convert to starpoints at a 1:1 ratio?

Also that page says:

To effectively manage the inventory of your Home Resort, and to ensure that there is sufficient space for Starwood Vacation Network (SVN) members, allotments for Starpoints conversion are set according to season and villa type at each resort. If the total allotment number has been reached, or if it is determined that SVN does not have the ability to rent the week to recover the costs associated with the conversion, a request may be denied.

Has anyone ever been denied when requesting a conversion?

How often and how many staroptions can be converted into starpoints?

The SO to SP conversion is different for each unit and each resort. For what I have it is closer to 50-60% of the SP (ie:SVR Cascades 90000 SO, 42000 SP)

You must convert your whole unit (or half if it is a lockout) for a full week. Unless you are 3*elite or above you can only convert every other year. (Lockouts can convert alternating sides every year)

The fee is $99 so converting a small unit regularly costs you a lot. I would convert the whole unit every few years rather than a smaller unit more often for this reason.

There is a never ending debate here on the value of conversion you can search for. Unless you play the game really well it is often not worth it from a $ value perspective, but some have done well with it. I, personally use it as a backup, rather than a primary plan.

Also, the SP you get from a conversion expire after 6 years unlike ones earned in a traditional fashion.

I hope this helps. I will likely be just one of many responses.

You don't really convert Staroptions to Starpoints. You actually can convert your week to either Staroptions or Starpoints.

Converting to points is not a great deal for a one week owner. For instance, I can convert my 2 bdm. Maui timeshare to 80K Starpoints - which will get me 5 nights in a standard hotel room at most Starwood hotels. Not a good value as far as I am concerned. Multiple week owners, with points to burn, who travel internationally, seem to get the most out of their points.

There is a Starpoint chart in Owner Resources at the top of the board that lists all the Starpoint values at all resorts.

For lots of info. about how Starwood works - see the FAQ at the top of the page - it will answer a lot of your questions.

gomike, ... The value of starpoint conversion does depend on just how you use starpoints.

80k starpoints can be converted into a Level 6 hotel room (20k-25k points per night) for up to 4 nights - with the 5th night free.

Here are the Starwood Level 6 hotels:

Plus, if a person is Platinum, there is a free upgrade (based upon availability). Although it won't always happen for me, 5 nights in an upgraded room at one of these Level 6 hotels is not really slumming. And, given what it costs to stay in a room for 5 nights at these hotels (even without an upgrade), I don't think it is a bad deal.

Plus, at 12k-16k per night, these are the Level 5 hotels at which you can get at least 5 nights (with the 6th night free and again an upgrade if you are Platinum):

Admittedly, some of the Level 5 hotels are not worth the 6 nights through 80k starpoints, but, IMO, most are. ... eom

You don't really convert Staroptions to Starpoints. You actually can convert your week to either Staroptions or Starpoints.

......Multiple week owners, with points to burn, who travel internationally, seem to get the most out of their points.

I would agree with that statement.

As an example.

I had previously deposited a studio unit with II and traded it for a 2BR at Kierland. As it turns out I was not going to be able to use it so I cancelled the week just before the redeposit to II would have become restricted. I was able to find a week in a 1BR in Switzerland and immediatly reserved it.

I was short AA miles so I transferred 40K Starpoints to AA netting a 50K deposit with the bonus. I was able to get two coach award seats on AA for my newly booked trip for March of '10.

If i had to pay for those tickets the current fare would have been over 2k per ticket. Admittedly I could have waited and something less expensive would have come along, however, being out of work at the moment, free is better than paying.

My 40K transfer is about 1/2 of converting my Maui week. In today's $ that saved me over $4000.00

I agree that Starpoints have the most value when used internationally, for either hotels or air.

How did you manage to get 2 coach tickets to Europe with 50,000 points? They are generally at least 60,000 points with AA.

Even if you did have to redeem the full 80K Starpoints, it is still a good deal to get $4,000 for your unit. You might have been able to rent it for that much, but it would have involved a lot more hassle.

...I was short AA miles so I transferred 40K Starpoints to AA netting a 50K deposit with the bonus. I was able to get two coach award seats on AA for my newly booked trip for March of '10....

The tickets were 40,000 miles each. I was short miles so I cashed in 40,000 Starpoints netting 50,000 AAdvantage miles. that, plus the miles in my AAdvantage account gave me the necessary 80,000 for the two tickets.

[Rental information removed.] No bites yet. I have until the end of June to decide what to do regarding Starpoints conversion..... If nothing happens with it before then. I will likely deposit part of it with II and convert the other to Starpoints.

[Because of our no advertising rule, you aren't allowed to post the details of your rentals in the forums. Thanks - DeniseM]

If I buy a mandatory resort on reasale am I able to convert into starpoints?

No, unfortunatly not.

Mandatory gets you the ability to convert your week to StarOptions and trade within the Starwood Vacation Network (SVN)

You can only convert to StarPoints if you purchase from the developer or requalify a resale purchase with a developer purchase.

See the FAQ for information on that
