I want to snag f.f. tix during prime summer, and it's approaching 331 days out. But if I want to stay at my destination 2-3 weeks, how can I put an itinerary on hold and snag the return date I want? Outbound is easy to get obviously, but is there a trick to keep putting the itinerary on hold in order to get a good return trip lined up for a few weeks out? TIA for any tips!

Different airlines have different policies and it also depends on your status with the carrier. In general, most of the airlines will let you book one way using miles so you may book outbound and inbound separately.

I just book my outbound and return ticket separately as soon as it reaches 331 days out respectively.....it's the same number of miles. Never had a problem.

You need to make sure the airline allows one way tickets for half of the round trip. IIRC AA does but DL doesn't.

I have not had to book 331 days early for any of my trips to Europe over the years and still managed low miles Tix.

YMMV

Cheers
