The Final Four!
First time ever!
Wow!
Last year, Alabama was the #1 overall seed in the tournament and didn't make it out of the Sweet 16. Nate Oates lost 8 players and all 3 of his assistant coaches from that team. So, this team is 75% new faces on the court and on the bench. They struggled at times, especially on defense. They lost one of their top scorers and defensive players, Wrightsell, during the SEC tournament and he hasn’t been able to play in the NCAA. The center, Pringle, has a foot injury and is struggling to stay on the court, but has been fierce on the boards and on defense. They had to go through North Carolina and Clemson, both with very strong inside games where Alabama struggles because of a lack of size. And they hustle, play the best defense they’ve played all year, shoot amazingly from the 3 point line and grit out a win over Clemson who beat them by 8 in Tuscaloosa earlier in the year. Wow!
The football school finally makes a Final Four. I played basketball in high school, not football. I’ve always liked basketball just a little bit better. I have been to the SEC tournament many times and always enjoy it immensely. I’ve been in the stadium six times to see Alabama win the BCS and CFP football national championships, and lose one. Finally, I get to watch them play in a Final Four. Although it will be on the big screen instead of in person, I can’t wait! Of course, the prize for making it is having to play UConn, but we’re there.
I’m hearing we’ll be about a 10-12 point underdog. I understand. UConn looks unbeatable, leading at some point by at least 30 points in all four of their tournament games so far. Nate will try to use that to his advantage. UConn has the size advantage and also can hit the threes. Same as UNC. Same as Clemson. I can’t wait!
Roll Tide!
Edited to add quote from Nick Pringle: “We’ve proved everybody wrong at this point. Two more games. We want it all.”
