I think this opening scene is the best for a Western, and is better than many on the list.
And as widely acknowledged by those whose livelihood depends on crafting effective movie opening scenes.

but at the time, audiences were captivated.

The closing scene was pretty good as well. Great acting by Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, and Claudia Cardinale. Henry Fonda said he really enjoyed playing a villain for once.

Henry Fonda didn't take the part right away when Leone approached him. Fonda decided to ask Eli Wallach what he thought. Wallach to take the part; he would have a great time.
