I'm escorting my mother and brother to New Orleans the first week of April for one-way cruise. They're cruising, I'm not. I got a ticket on their one-way flight out, and am now looking for a one-way fare back to Seattle. I can't believe how expensive airfares are that first April week. I could fly to Hawaii for the same total cost flying to/from New Orleans, $750! Mardi Gras week is not even that much! But it is after Easter, and spring break for many schools, I guess...

For those who go to New Orleans somewhat regularly, have you seen a sweet spot time for airfare? Maybe within 60 days or so out? I've been watching for over a month, and fares are very steady. I might as well keep watching and hope they go down....:ponder:

The first week of April is spring break here on Long Island. Our break runs from Good Friday through April 7th. We are going to New Orleans that week, and the airfares were much higher than for the surrounding weeks.

I believe French Quarter Festival is going on that weekend and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Check it out online and perhaps they may want to stay a few days for it. There are 21 bandstands all around the Quarter with every kind of music and it's all free. People come from all over the world for it. Amtrak has a train going to Jackson, Ms at 1:30 everyday (2.5 hr)so check airfare from there.

Thanks, I looked at Jackson MS, but airfare was no better from there than New Orleans.
However a low fare started showing on discount Spirit airlines. It has a long layover, but it's in Las Vegas, so I'll go to a spa, maybe gamble a little etc.
Not too bad...:)

Southwest is going to be your best bet; would not fly Spirit.

Thanks I would prefer Southwest but when I started looking in late November, all the Wanna getaway fares were sold out. I have adjusted my expectations on what Spirit flights will be like, realizing they are a no-frills airline. Will bring my own drinks and snacks ;) I'm looking forward to my Las Vegas layover :)

French Quarter Fest is a great Festival. OP, If you are there at the same time I would highly recommend it.

We booked early and got a great fare on Frontier - $532 r/t for the 2 of us, nonstop from Long Island, leaving 3/31 and returning 4/4. Last week I got an email from Frontier that they are eliminating the route. They would re-route us through LGA, but their flight from there has 2 layovers for a total of 25 hrs each way. I told them to put me through another city that goes to MSY, like Orlando or Denver. Their response was that they will only pay to fly us to one city, and that we would have to pay for the 2nd leg.
By that time, Southwest was $1600 r/t for the 2 of us.
I ended up getting flights from ISP with a layover on American for $700 for both.
Frontier gave us each $100 voucher, and I read in the newspaper the other day that they cut the route due to it not being profitable.

Thanks! I'll look it up and see if I can drag my mother to it :) Unfortunately she's not big on music.

As for airfare, Alaska had an exorbitant fare back to Seattle, non-stop, for over $700.
It finally came down to something more reasonable, $350, but I had already gotten my Spirit airfare.
So far Spirit hasn't made any changes to my flights AFAIK

Ouch! sorry about the Frontier changes and attitude. They should have honored getting you to your destination; but I think airlines have lee-way of changing your departure times by as much as 24 hours.

I just checked Southwest one-way from N.O. to Seattle. You don't say which day you need, but if you can fly Tues, Weds, or Friday, the fare is less than $200.
