Good morning, everyone. I have been a timeshare owner since 2004 and recently widowed. My portfolio is busting at the seams and I would like to utilize my ownership as rentals to help pay maintenance fees. I own weeks, points and everything in between lol with Marriott, Starwood and Westgate. Please advise.

You'd probably do better by posting in those specific brand boards on TUG.

If you don't know what your doing and even if you do, Airbnd and VRBO are pretty good places to start, imo. There are plenty of safeguards to both the renters and owners using these sites. The rental agreement and terms are all spelled out. The audience looking for rentals is huge. Prices are competitive meaning you don't have to discount the price of rent for most rentals.

Once you get some renters that you are comfortable with it is easy to go private agreement.

Great advice, everyone! Thank you. At this time, I have vacation points I can use to book within Marriott/Starwood. What are your suggestions for rentals? Should I book something then rent or advertise that I can book wherever someone wishes to book? I'm also sitting on a week deposited into Interval that I won't be able to use but can book anywhere available through 12/31.

I'm sorry for your loss. The interval week won't be much use as its against intervals policy to allow rentals, you may be forced to use that one yourself. You will likely be best off if you select a desirable week at a good resort and then advertise it for rent at redweek or one of the other suggested sites.

Hi TClardy:
Welcome to TUG. I am very sorry for your loss.

In general, you want to reserve a "high-demand week". Summer at the Beach, 4th of July almost anywhere, mid-Jan thru end of Feb in Palm Springs and south Florida. March in Phoenix/Scottsdale. Summer is higher demand overall because school is out. Once school is back in session, families are not able to travel, so your potential renter market is much smaller.

For the week you have in Interval, ask your friends/family/co-workers where they may wish to travel. Does the week have Marriott priority / Starwood priority or neither?

I use a broker to rent my excess points. It covers my MF and a little more. I could probably do better if I took the time to do it myself but I don't have the time or desire and he is very professional...

Send me a PM if you want his details (don't want to advertise here...).

Cheers!
