We are taking a family vacation over Labor Day this year and want to avoid the sargassum debacle. Anywhere in the Caribbean or Mexico free of this stuff?

If not - do you know of ANY beaches in the US or Mexico that might be better?

We just returned from Playa Del Carmen and it was AWFUL.. :-(((

TIA

Cancun seems to have less of a problem than PDC. We stayed at Fisherman last year and they had a guy out every morning digging a hole in the sand and burying all the seaweed.

The west coast beaches aren’t as nice as the gulf but seaweed won’t be a problem.

the Cozumel Island along with the coastal currents appear to be why the Playa del Carmen sometimes has a much bigger problem than Cancun

I will visit FA Villas in Cancun the 20 of June and heard the same, PDC is plenty, but not Cancun, the location of this resort help to avoid sargassum, it is inside of the bay of Cancun and in front is Isla Mujeres.

The West coast may be more immune from the Sargasso, but that's because the water is colder. That also makes the ocean less comfortable to swim in.

it was taken in March, this year. But I think that in Cancun, even when the do have some weeds, it is still a fraction of what you can have in PDC. Not to mention that the Lagunamar pools are so amazing, you end up spending a lot of time there anyways.

We were in Cancun last weekend. It was inundated.

where exactly did you stay? I am looking at the Hard Rock live camera (not far from the Westin Lagunamar) I do not see a problem

JW Marriott---right next store. This was a pic I took of a rainbow on May 31. So about 2 weeks ago. My math was a little off. And this wasn't the worst of it. Some people ventured in. Like swimming in a seaweed soup.

Sargassum analysis reveals high levels of arsenic, heavy metals
https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/high-levels-of-arsenic-heavy-metals/

Mexico News Daily / June 12, 2019

“Better think twice before cooking up a pot of sargassum stew.

Scientists in Mexico and the United States have detected high levels of arsenic and heavy metals in sargassum that washed up on Quintana Roo beaches.

Rosa Elisa Rodríguez Martínez, a researcher at UNAM’s reef systems unit in Puerto Morelos, said the “serious levels” of arsenic and heavy metals such as cadmium represent a risk to both human and animal health.

She said that arsenic levels 60% higher than those permitted in human and animal food products were detected in the sargassum samples taken from beaches in Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen in the north of the state and Othón P. Blanco in the south.

Rodríguez said heavy metal levels as high as 120 parts per million were detected in some of the samples.

She explained that the scientists who carried out the tests sought the assistance of nutrition experts to determine whether the seaweed could still be used as fodder for livestock or compost....”

I called today to FAVC Villas Cancun, because we arrive the next week, they told me that the main problem is in PDC and more in Tulum. The sargassum that arrive in Cancun evryday is removed by hotel workers. Also the problem is in public beaches because nobody remove it.

indeed it appears to depend on the area. I checked the live feed next to Westin Lagunamar and it seems to be OK, the beach is as beautiful as ever.
