So, there are a lot of threads about retiring...who would like to retire in Disney World?

Someone sent my husband information on buying a home in Golden Oak at Disney World in Orlando. Prices start at the mid $2 million mark (but it does include a few years of passes to WDW as a perk to buying in). My DH was astonished and we both wondered who would buy here? I know there are some TUG members who love Disney, but would you really want to LIVE Disney?

I can think of a lot of other things I'd rather do with $2.85M than buy a 2,800sf house in a Disney planned neighborhood!

Wow if anyone could sell swampland in Florida, it would be Disney. Absolutely no desire to live in Orlando. IMO...if we were to retire in Florida (slim chance) it would be directly on a beach for that price.

That price went up because a friend of mine was considering a purchase years ago, and it was about $900K for the house she was drooling over. It was pretty amazing. Of course Disney would go up in value faster than anything else. The neighborhood is really pretty and very exclusive. Not my cup of tea.

I like Florida but this VIP retirement community is probably not in my future

But Brett, come on, don't forget, a few years of passes to WDW as a perk to buying in!

Please don’t forget those maintenance fees increases after time.
They are starting at $25.000 per year. What will they be in Five (5) to Ten (10) years.
Maybe, they are projecting that you will expire after Five (5) to Ten (10) years in this Golden Wonderland. LOL.

The land per lot must be selling for 1.9 million dollars.

Wasn't Celebration, Florida, originally a Disney venture?

I spent an afternoon in Celebration once. I felt like I'd accidentally ended up in Stepford. I kept looking up at the windows in all those houses, to see if people were peeking around the curtains at me. Totally creepy place.

Even if I had the money, I wouldn't want to retire to WDW. I like Disney, but not that much.

I will not be retiring south of the 40th parallel UNLESS elevation of said city is > 6,000 feet.

Pass on Florida....

I could buy a house in *actual* Burano for less than what they are selling the "Burano" for, LOL! (And I just checked real estate prices to confirm that.)

And, yes, Celebration was a Disney production as well. And, I agree, a Stepford version of New Urbanism. For when people don't want to live in the real world any more, and, I guess, have the money to #optout.

That's funny. A sort of Stepford-Disney culdesac was exactly what came to my mind, too.

Disney certainly does the experience thing really, really well. Our kids, and now grandkids, love the Disney magic, but I'm always finding myself peeking behind the curtain.

I like real life (warts and all, which breaks my heart sometimes) so I don't want to live in some manufactured bubble, however grand it may be. I just wonder who this neighborhood is geared towards?

I doubt these will be purchased as primary residences by most of the owners. I suspect many/most will be purchased as second/third/fourth homes by the very wealthy.

You might be right. I keep forgetting that the very rich are truly different than us... I visit that world every once in awhile, and ponder on it's longevity.

We have this discussion every once in a while. Even if we hit lotto, as much as we/my family loves Disney, I would not want a home in Orlando. Somewhere in Florida, yes, maybe near the ocean.

I love staying in the bubble :)

A coworker friend of mine always said when she "retired" she wanted toplay one of the characters in Disney World or maybe Williamsburg.

I remember when they built Celebration. I could see myself living there- except for the heat and i suppose the traffic must be a nightmare. Haven't been to Orlando in a very long time and don't plan to go back.

As far as that price- forgetaboutit! For that their are tons of other places I would rather live in if I had that money to spend on housing. Plus, I would buy our son a home with part of it.

Disney and Arvida.
Arvida made several of these “hometown” communities in Florida.
One near me blew away with hurricane Andrew.

They are all picture perfect planned towns.

Weston is another where Vacation Village has 3 timeshare resorts.

No way! I decided in 1966 that I would not return to live in my home state of Florida and I haven't changed my mind one bit.
