OKayyyy...We finally did it! Took the bus to La Habichuela last night, and the bus back. Surprisingly easy. The food was delicious, and the service excellent. And I can now say I have had a cocobichuela! If you don't know what that is, you just have to give it a try. La Habichuela Sunset (near Lagunamar) is nice, but the original La Habichuela (downtown) has even better food and service. We especially enjoyed dining in the open-air interior courtyard.

Directions: Take the R1 bus and get off at the 2nd stop after the bus turns right onto Tulum Ave (going north). There is a crosswalk about half a block north of the bus stop, leading toward a somewhat smallish Burger King. Cross Tulum Ave. towards the Burger King and proceed straight ahead down the walkway (pedestrian only) to Parque de Las Palapas (the park gets lively after dark, well lit). Work your way to the right and across the park. Turn right on the street on the far side of the park (northwest corner), and...shortly on your left...you will find the restaurant.

Before you go, be sure to stop at Lagunamar's concierge desk to get a chit for free Mayan coffees. Even if you don't like coffee, it's worth it just to watch the fiery tableside production. But you will like it...I promise.

Be sure to chat with the manager on the way out. He proceeded to surprise us with free Mayan Kisses...a very tasty after-dinner drink made from Kaluha, Mayan liqueur, and cream.

To return, go back to the Burger King and step out between the parked cars. Watch for the R1 bus (they come by about every 2 minutes) and stick your arm out just as the locals do to flag the bus down. Easy...this is a bus stop, even though it doesn't look it.

We will be back there again on our next visit to Lagunamar.

Thanks for the info! I always feel empowered once I figure out the local bus system. I much prefer taking the a bus over a taxi or driving.

Excellent restaurant downtown. We went there 2 years ago and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Also ate in the dining court yard area, great experience!
