7 Natural Wonders You Need to Explore in Italy
By Cynthia Chou/ Viva/ Lifestyle & Travel/ vivalifestyleandtravel.com

"We all know Italy to be a haven for hardcore foodies and history buffs, home to amazing man-made wonders such as the marinara pizza and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. What we might not be as familiar with, are Italy's surprisingly-abundant natural wonders. Although not the largest country, Italy has an incredibly diverse landscape and terrain that encompasses everything from snowy mountains to tropical beaches...."

Climb Stromboli. Camp on top.
It's a live volcano, been erupting for two thousand years. In the night you can see the lava bombs glow red as they're spat from the crater. They arc red against the black sky, and fall against the slopes like cigarette ash and wink out. Under your sleeping mat you feel the ancient slopes go boom with every eruption, rattling your dreams.

There's a path from the black sand beaches up to the crater - a three hour climb if you find the right path. Twenty-five years ago I got lost and climbed the wrong face by accident. That was a day I'll never forget. Not many people get to say, "I was once almost cooked to death on a live volcano!"

Unless things have changed, Stromboli can be reached by ferry from Milazzo, a city on the north coast of Sicily.
