DH is a firefighter and has to use a vehicle escape tool many times. He thought they were so useful that he purchased one for each of our 3 vehicles as well for each of our children's and their spouses vehicles. They are very similar to the one pictured below and despite their size, work very well. DH hung the gadget on the gear selector stick (or standard transmission shifter) of each vehicle with a twist tie so it holds snug (& wont fall off in a roll-over) but can easily be taken off in an emergency. He has used one of ours when he was first on the scene of a rollover in which the car ended up overturned in a 3ft deep river. He was able to break the drivers side window and then cut the seatbelt so he could pull the woman out. He saved her from drowning before the fire dept rescue truck could get on scene, but unfortunately the woman passed away a few hours later from severe head trauma during the roll-over.

Every vehicle should have one!

Hi Diane,

It looks like Escape Tools you have in the picture are the Spring-Loaded type - is that correct?

Thanks

Richard

Yes, the window breaker part is. They are very easy to operate and don't require a lot of force at all. I was surprized that such a small thing would break the glass but I think its the speed and force of the bit popping out that does it.

I've always kept a spring loaded center punch in the center console.

Just an FYI: Need to use on the side door windows, not the windshield. The windshield is impact resistant.
