We will soon be making a cross country trek with pets while helping my dd move. Most of the route will be the I-40. While we are normally a Marriott family, the $75. extra pet fee is pretty hefty; it's the same fee if you're staying one night or several but we will be driving on each day. Any other recommended chains out there we should look at? Thanks for your thoughts and experiences!

Check out La Quinta - they accept pets and I don't think there is an extra charge

We have had Hotels give us a discount on the Pet Fee when we explain the Dog will be Crated to sleep and whenever left in Room by itself.

I’m not sure the pet fee is uniformly charged. We are former Starwood people reluctantly dragged into Bonvoy so I can’t say whether Starwood policies have changed since the merger or not. But for (former) Starwood pet-friendly properties, sometimes there’s a pet fee and sometimes none at all. There was no efficient way to check for the zero pet fee places but it wasn’t that rare. For sure there was nothing like a $75 fee across all properties.

Most Holiday Inn and Staybridge hotels allow pets at no charge.

My experience has been that it's generally a property to property policy, and not corporate as most hotels are individually owned & operated under a franchise or licensee agreement.

Also check if they have a size limit. I was recently in a place that didn't allow pets over 35 pounds.
